The State has waged an effective war on smoking in the last twenty years. I was in the queue in the local shop the other day and overheard the cost of 20 Mayfair Blues (I believe this is one of the cheapest packets of cigarettes) being £13.85. You can't smoke anywhere indoors.
However, junk food and drink is a whole different ball game. In many respects, junk food is part of our culture, whether we like it or not. Can the State wage the same kind of war on junk food as it did with smoking?
I'm not so sure.

Hate to be That Guy, but it sounds as if you two (JT & JC) have a touch of self-justification in your comments.
Your pricings are way out, but even if they weren't, eating healthily isn't about out of season fruit, it's about avoiding Ultra high processed foods and ready meals as well as sweets and crisps. One chicken jalfrezi takeaway without trimmings £8-10, wholemeal loaf £2, pack of butter £2, 1/2 kilo grapes £1, couple of avocados £1, 1/2 kilo cheese £2.50 (all prices currently available round here)
In answer to the OP, though, this isn't something 'the government' can do really easily because, unlike tobacco, there is no really unarguable way of deciding what is healthy and what is not. It would help if they banned ingredients such as palm oil and taxed foods above a certain level of refined sugar content, I suppose, but it would take decades.

I had no idea JC was paying that much for his jalfrezi. He must really like them!
