I am currently spending my day listening to one of the finest and most carefully curated collections in Europe, my own.
Radiohead's Moon shaped pool and Simple minds sisters-feelings twin release had found earlier favour.
Flipping through records I came across:
It's not an album...... It's actually..... Fuck off.
So, what did I make of it. I haven't played it in probably thirty years.
It is a bit, proggy . It's a little whimsical and fantastically ramshackle . As it opens my heart sank a little, mystery tour is a bit Lionel Bart preeeesents!! Fool on the hill following doesn't help either. Maybe it sounds better as cartoon characters song. Its not crap, it's just, meh.
I really like Flying. I mean, what is it? An instrumental of course, I like the way it plods along and the fact that it brings relief from McCartneys John the baptist to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Christ groundwork.
Blue jay way may not sound as fresh or as out there to the more educated and sophisticated 'world music' listener's we all are now. Truth is, if Ravi received a standing ovation while tuning his axe from the pop royalty of the day, no one knew any fucking better. George creates a mystical eastern sound, this time without ( as far as I can hear) anything other than western instruments. It is a strange hazy thing, all a bit woozy and unsteady on its feet. Your mother should know . A Wilfred Pickles and Dandy nichols movie theme tune, for an irrelevant, light comedy ,set in poplar. Did you really want your mother shouting "turn it up" from the kitchen ?
I am the walrus is immense. It all comes together, nasally vocals, gibberish and a driving beat. I am always disappointed that the 'boys' didn't rock more. As the man wrote: A chattering, spinning cacophony of electricity and hissing gongs behind a barely audible 'conversation' bloody marvellous !!
A quick nod to Ringo ,(peace) who keeps blue jay way and walrus sound just that little bit more interesting.
Side 2
Hello goodbye is a pretty solid start. I know someone creams their jeans in America as it arrives via the magic of F.M radio every hour. . Penny lane is obnoxious, You could fit it into the Mary Poppins soundtrack. More syrup on your pancakes? It does have a wonderful overall production feel ,its the work of a talented craftsman, no denying that. It is begging for Dick van Dyke to grab the mike
Strawberry fields, baby you're a rich man and all you need is love are all quite special. There is a real feel of innovation and sheer clever artistry. Ringo's shuffles and uncle George's input, brass band northern cobbles and little orchestra flourishes, all of this in a fog of wonderful psychedelic touches. Strawberry field is something very special.
I like baby a lot. It is a nice little stomper , again with some fantastic little sprinkles and flourishes , although these are not often apparent when casually listening. My copy is a little tiny sounding production wise. Hopefully Giles hasn't got around to fucking it up.
All you need is love, outrageous really, it feels rushed, banged out, lyrically lazy and all a bit, wimpy. Thing is, it's all that and more. The guitar break is weird and one really strange tone. Uncle George padded the mops ode to world peace quite beautifully. No one would think of making a track like this anymore. It is unforgettable. A deserved earworm.
Get rid of mother and Penny lane and shove Hey Bulldog in the mix and it would be a better ride. So, there you go. Please, can we just revert to calling me clawth ears or summat in reply to my post. Much more preferable than the ball busting ,alter worshiping ,nuance ridden devout worship and evangelical superlatives that this bunch regularly receive.
I quite liked it.
