Nah, it's just Todd thinking '80s pop.....from the UK....that'll get 'em wound up!'
I've listened to the Ricky Nelson tune again. The solo is the peak, and it comes unusually early. Then it's an undistinguished and terribly repetitive stroll to the end.

What's actually properly great by this dude, then? James B or Rick N?
If it's the former, try list at the end of the Wikipedia link in the OP. If the latter, lots of fine rock &roll/pop singles, but none that I would say were 'properly' great. I'll leave his mid-to-late-Sixties reinvention to the American posters, as I never followed it.

When I want committed vocals, I play The Human League! I'm not necessarily buying into the non-committal vocal charge, but this is a strange example to pick. You think Phil Oakey didn't give his all, wasn't fully invested in the realisation of the sound and aesthetic, and didn't convey that to his audience? Because that's a bit weird, surely? I doubt that much thought has gone into the comment. 'The Human League' is just shorthand Davey speak for 'naff 80s pop music the Brits like'.

Make that “naff 80s pop music the Brits like in which the singer sounds utterly and completely disinterested in the song.”

Disinterested would be a very difficult tone to capture, I reckon. It'd take some effort to get that feeling across.

You could call Gary Numan's quasi - speaking singing style 'disinterested' i suppose. But Oakey is an odd call, his singing was always quite emotive, take the way he belts out the chorus of 'Don't You Want Me' for example.

Not spectacular but pretty nice. I do like James Burton's playing.

Belts out the chorus ! If Phil turned up at your local in a disguise and sang along to it on karaoke night, I imagine the punters would nip outside for a fag. Jesus. I know you really go all in when defending any criticism towards your preferences. Honestly, it's really difficult to ignore the out of tune singing and how unemotional it is. Its actually fascinating that a such a bouncy , poppy sound can still work for so many with such a monotone soulless delivery. Even Oakey cokey thought Rushent had fucked up after hearing it. It was supposed to be darker.
