Honestly, it's really difficult to ignore the out of tune singing and how unemotional it is. Its actually fascinating that a such a bouncy, poppy sound can still work for so many with such a monotone soulless delivery. This, totally and every word of it.
On the other hand, it works for me too (strangely, it's also because of the singing - off-key and casual-sounding as it may be, I do like the timbre of Oakey's voice).

Phil Oakey's soulless delivery is key to their sound. I don't think he's a good singer (live tracks I've heard are awful), but he commits fully to the song, plays his part perfectly, and brays out with passion whenever needed.
I mean, would they be better with Marvin Gaye? With Curtis Mayfield?
You don't have to answer that question, btw.

MK2 League with Rick Astley would have worked.
I like Phil on MK1. The overall sound and feel, colder, more detached. It suited the idea.

His voice is perfect on this one (which I suppose is where old and new HL meet, even though the girls are present - it's not exactly chart-bound pop music)

MK2 League with Rick Astley would have worked. Rick Astley isn't even suited to being Rick Astley, he only really works as a conceptual Morrissey.
