Too difficult to name just one. So, one at a time it is then. Jesus & Mary chains upside down. The velvets white light track has always thrilled me to my very core because it sounds like nothing else, feels like an alien on earth. The chains debut had the same pull on me. It sounds tamer now, hardly groundbreaking, squeeling feedback and vocals , not so much buried in the mix, more refusing to be released from the vocal chords. Yeah, its a bit this- bit that. It just comes together, short, sharp and sweet. It did that rare trick. It lived up to the hype. 30 minute gigs ( on a good night) attitude and mystery and a really great name. They got close (twice actually) to be that exciting again. Sometimes, noise is all you need.

As promised, one at a time.
Wah! Better scream.
Wow, what a record, heroic vocals and the most wonderful guitar sound. It seemed ( at the time) that this was the lesser partner in the legendary, imaginary but nevertheless crucial band that never was.
Old Pete arrived with a bang. As a debut single it set a bar so high, despite an heroic beautiful attempt in the debut album, he could never truly match. It is a life affirming,toe-tapping tour de force. For a little while he was the Lord of Liverpool and the Earl of Eric's.

I nearly picked that Dayo. I think dark entries and terror couple may be better tracks, although Bela is indeed a remarkable and daring debut.

Also, lest we forget
Anarchy in the UK
I think that exhausts my imaginary list of top ten singles ever of its debutant component.

Also, lest we forget Anarchy in the UK I think that exhausts my imaginary list of top ten singles ever of its debutant component. That's a good call. It is ,like my other selections, one of those are you gonna cut it moments. It was a game changer, Lydon did it again with public image.

Anarchy in the UK is a great track and a game changer, but if we're heading punkwards, "Oh Bondage, Up Yours!" is both a debut single and the perfect encapsulation of the punk ideal.
California Uber Alles, too, ffs. Nearly forgot.
New Order's ceremony should be mentioned, even if it was a left-over.
