King Crimson - Cat Food
Any thoughts on this highlight from KC's second album?
Me, I like it, very fond of Tippett's piano playing here, and great singing by Lake.

I like it (if not quite love it). Drummer Michael Giles is a pleasure, as usual.

Comes across as a bit of a non-tune with jazz pretensions. The piano seems pretty pointless and slightly gimmicky. But at least the drumming was good.
It's a miss from me.

I do like it, especially the Entwistle-esque "chorus" bit ("No use to complain..."). But I feel like Sinfield is being overly snide in his take on housewives doing the shopping. I'm all for insults about modern crap products, but maybe it wasn't necessary to center it around a lady shopping. It's hard enough as it is navigating the endless parade of modern conveniences and frozen foods. Give her a break!

As with everyone else, I like the drums. I love the freedom of that piano, it's very ornate and provides the only real beauty to be found in the song. If the track was just drums and piano, it could've been great. Unfortunately, the bass is standard 70s rock bass, and kind of dominates despite being utterly boring and undoubtedly played by someone with a beard. The vocal is completely obnoxious, a dreadful proper rawk-star performance that should've been stomped on and set on fire.

Yes, also popping in to praise the drums. That's a nice sound.
The song is hard to really care about.

I like the track vocal included. I just don't think it really adds up to much. I'd count myself as a King Crimson fan but I think they have a pattern. they put out a "strong statement" album and then the albums are diminishing returns until the next "strong statement" I think his is a pattern they do throughout their career and it begins here.

I guess you mean In The Court, Larks Tongues in Aspic, Discipline and Thrak. Sounds almost right, except I don't think I'd rate Red below LTiA.

yeah, me neither but it sounded good at the time. Red was the sound of that incarnation flaming out. I think it stands with their best. I like "starless" too but I do think the "statement" albums have a lot of authority and loom over the others in a way.

My introduction to this tune was from the cassette version of "The Compact King Crimson" comp I bought in the late 80's. 'Cat Food' was probably my least favourite song on the tape, but I've gotten over my initial dislike and now only find it mildly annoying, although I find it musically foreshadows 'Lizard' which is one of my faves, so I cut it some slack.
