Catchy, but pretty insubstantial and annoying. It's probably in the middle of the two options.

Oh, I think ca. 85-89, Bell and Clarke had a pretty winning formula for the pop confection. These long and winding catchy melodies piling on hook after hook, always making the most of Bell's voice. This one is a winner - nearly as strong as "Sometimes" or "Chains of Love".
I wouldn't die if I never heard this song again (this is their biggest hit, right?), cause it was pretty ubiquitous, and we're ultimately describing the sort of ephemeral empty carbs of a candy bar, but...I'm 100% in favor of it.

It's a definite hit, isn't it? Vince Clarke's got a bit of maverick synth-pop genius about him, and at this point it was probably the most overtly POP he'd been in his entire career. It's a massively catchy chorus, the kind of thing that you still find yourself singing a decade after last hearing the tune. Erasure were a class chart act, and probably deserve more respect than they get, and that was definitely no pun intended.

Awful. I really don’t like the histrionic vocals.
I have a pretty limited tolerance to synth pop. I reckon Yazzoo were better; classier; less OTT.

"Hit", in the absence of a "Footy" option.

I don't like it too much, but the vocal melody is decent. The video does it no favours.

"shit" seems strong. I mean, people like it, right? I like Alvin & the Chipmunks. If I told you my favorite Alvin songs and you said they were shit, I'd take that personal, wouldn't I?
he loves her so much that his voice noticeably wavers. not quite as bloodless as most synth-pop of this type and vintage but pretty darned close.
meh.

I really wanted to leave it to someone else to trot out the old 'I had to LIVE through this!' line...

I've warmed to a lot of Synth Pop over the years (DF has been a bad influence), but not Erasure. Maybe it's the overt POP sensibilities, maybe the vocals, do not know..Just cannot stand Erasure.

Don't be so sure about that.

Can't say I cared for it. The whole mid 80's Erasure, Bronski Beat over the top synthy falsetto disco glam was not what I was listening to at the time, so there's no need to start now. It sounds tailor made for a John Hughes movie and I didn't like those either.
