Technically, it opens with the second worst song on the album, but Steppenwolf 7 earns some kind of award for leading off with three duds in a row, then abruptly turning great and staying there 'til the end.

Peter Murphy's Love Hysteria is a great album which does its part in proving that Bauhaus were better apart than together (the offshoots and post-breakup bands were mostly better than the band itself was, IMO), but its leadoff track, "All Night Long", is the weakest. It's like he wanted to slowly get people into it with some fluff before getting deep into stuff like "Dragnet Drag" and especially "Socrates the Python" and "Time Has Got Nothing to Do With It". Fair enough. It's not a bad song, and the album just gets better and better as it goes along.

Bauhaus were far better than any of the offshoots, and Pete Murphy's solo stuff is dreadful.

Yes. I did think of this one. "Light Up the Sky" would have really done the business. Such a great album. YNG is ok (actually it’s really good), and maybe if you were familiar with the Ronstadt song it might mean more, but… The rest of V H 2 is awesome-LUTS is mint!

My familiarity with the Ronstadt arrangement honestly makes the VH version seem even more superfluous (and I generally enjoy their covers - the cover heavy Diver Down is a personal favorite).

I liked Dali's Car quite a lot, Tones on Tail a bit, the 2nd and 3rd Murphy albums a whole lot, and a couple Love and Rockets albums esp. Earth Sun Moon. I love some of the stuff on TSGO ('Exquisite Corpse' is wonderful) and BFTI (to use some annoying acronyms), but wasn't too taken with the earlier stuff. Feel free to expound on what you like about the original group. I will try to listen with fresh ears ...

I've rarely met a version I didn't like.

I'll grant it's a bit of a "sore thumb," but I love that track.

Well, you've got to remember that Bauhaus were only around for four years, were despised by the music press, yet codified a genre and became one of the most influential bands of the 80s. They had a genuine experimental edge and a wide range of style, in such a short period of time. What kind of band has a debut single that goes on for over 9 minutes, and tries to capture the mood of expressionist-influenced horror cinema with a dub-reggae based structure? Really, the power of the band relies on the songwriting and structure from the rhythm section, the guitar and vocals compete with each other to add all the colour and theatricality. Take an album like Mask, you've got the funk/disco of Kick in the Eye, the 12-string hypnotic folk-riffing of the title track, and the gothic horror experimentalism of Of Lillies and Remains. You don't get that variation, that sheer exuberance from any of the offshoots. Short lived, but burned ridiculously brightly.

I loved Bauhaus. The debut is fantastic. A beautiful noise, they made some great singles.

The release of Kris Kristofferson’s debut album was almost a revolution in and of itself. He may not have created “outlaw country,” but he personified it - and that first album still stands as one of the greatest the genre ever produced. It’s just great song after great song.
Except for the opener, which may have served a kind of a purpose as a “statement” at the time, but now is just dated and awkward:

Nashville Skyline is, for me, the Dylan album (I mean, of those that I enjoy) that starts with its weakest moment.
