For mine, I'm disallowing solo albums by group members in order to focus on the idea of "best albums by people trying this for the first time" aka "people who got it right from the start", rather than solo albums by, say, Paul McCartney or Robert Fripp who, by the time they did them, were already experienced recording artists.
Almost surreally difficult to put them in order because they're all great in their own ways, and how to you compare different greatnesses? But here's an attempt:
The Velvet Underground and Nico - s/t Family - Music in a Doll’s House Procol Harum - s/t The Doors - s/t The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? (U.S. version)
Traffic - Mr. Fantasy (U.S. version) King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King Roxy Music - s/t The Who - The Who Sings My Generation (U.S. version of My Generation) Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! Thunderclap Newman - s/t The Soft Machine - s/t Boston - s/t Steely Dan - Can’t Buy a Thrill
Led Zeppelin - s/t Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets ELO - No Answer Van Halen - s/t The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man

Yeah, great call. It just got squeezed out of my list, but on a different day it would have been in.

Van Halen s/t The Cult - Dreamtime (despite the ‘thin production’!) Al di Meola - Land of the Midnight Sun David Lee Roth - Eat em and Smile ( slight cheat) Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine Steely Dan - Can’t etc Generation X - s/t Siouxsie etc - The Scream Killing Joke - s/t Machine Head - Burn My Eyes Pearl Jam - Ten Warrior Soul - Last Decade Dead Century U2 - Boy White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1 Lloyd Cole - Rattlesnakes LZ - LZ1 Badlands - s/t Aerosmith - s/t Black Crowes - Shake…
These are all treasured albums for me. There are plenty of other artists whose second albums would absolutely eclipse the debut ( such as Dream Theater, Alice in Chains, Metallica, etc) so I left those out.

Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets Does Eno not count as a group member going solo? I was about to include a disclaimer, but decided I'd leave it for someone to point out. I allowed myself that one because he didn't contribute that much to Roxy (what?!!), certainly not as a writer, and this was his first real outing to see what he could do. More problematic was the ELO album, which was made by pretty seasoned writers/players (various albums in The Move and Idle Race), but it was such a leap into new strange territory, it seemed to fit in my list. I will keep thinking though; maybe I can find a couple to substitute...

Damn, I forgot the Bee Gees and Pretenders. Bye-bye, Pretties and Syd, as much as it pains me.

Most of my picks have appeared before
The Doors Patti Smith Velvet Underground & Nico Jimi Hendrix Experience Led Zeppelin Elvis Costello The Band King Crimson Roxy Music The Mothers of Invention R.E.M. Ramones Nilsson The Mamas & The Papas Leonard Cohen Big Star
Plus a few that I don't think have been mentioned:
Tom Waits Crosby Stills & Nash* Dr. John John Mayall Bluesbreakers
*Does this meet Quaco's criteria? I'd think so.
