I've always loved it. I never understand the antipathy towards them. I mean I get they represent some kind of Californian AOR to people that must have dominated the US radio waves in the 70s and 80s. I can see how that might have become something to fight against, but in the UK we only got a few hits and they always sounded great to me - a really effervescent take on pop soul. That keyboard intro sounds like the first day of spring to me, so bright and confident and the effortless way the falsetto goes into the chorus is just pop magic.

Musically, I've always quite liked the first few seconds of that relaxed groove.
But as soon as that McDonald prick opens his fucking mouth the red mist comes down, and I get an urge to start stabbing puppies.

I like it too. McDonald is Yacht / AOR incarnate, but the hooks are too delicious to resist.
You'd have to be a fule not to like it.

There's something...look I'm not gonna use lofty words like "subversive" here, but...that song is fucking heartbreaking.
It's such an unconventional approach to take in a pop song (written by two fairly hacky tunesmiths, if we're gonna be real here...tell me "Footloose" isn't the work of a cynical, mercenary cunt) - such a depressing subject...the man who thinks she was the one that got away/the great love of his life...versus...the woman who thinks...well, clearly the man didn't make ANY sort of impression on her...probably sees him as some lamentable indiscretion/one night stand AT BEST.
For a frothy pop song to contain that kind of "emotional information"...it's like finding out that ice cream contains the same nutrients as broccoli.

The Doobies were very much a homegrown band for Bay Areans like me. Johnston leaving and McDonald joining were kinda seen as a betrayal in my neck o' the woods. I hated 'em at first, but that was partly due to my age at the time. I didn't really like any music of this ilk at the time.
But as time has gone by, I've very much changed my tune on McDonald and Doobies' song of this era. The calculated, maybe even contrived, professional songcraft doesn't get in the way any more. In fact, I kinda appreciate it in the way I do Steve Winwood's later evolution.

Like others have said, the words never made any impression on me for years. But lately, the song has risen about twelvefold in my estimation, and amazingly, the music sounds better too.
