Floyd - the best on the bunch Stones - close second Beatles - can't listen to them these days but this a fave
Kinks - middling efort from their golden period
Bowie - my favourite track of his, post hunky dory Neil - plenty more tracks i'd put in front of that
Reed - i've no interest in him after the 3rd VU album

Is 'Golden Years' even trying to be a soul record? It has elements of soul, but its too idiosyncratic to be called a soul record ( or even a failed soul record if you want to be mean). Bowie's vocal seems closer to crooning than the approach taken by a conventional soul vocal. Whatever..for me it's close to perfect. Fair comment about the singing. It's just faked soul wankery is what I associate with that TWD coked-out nonsense with which he blotted his escutcheon so copiously. Soulful vocalizing may be what he imagined he was doing with that 'crooning' (I prefer 'mooing'

I'm the guy who doesn't like 'Satellite of Love' I think it's overproduced. And the lyrics are corny/banal. And the backing vocals are terrible. I've been around and around about this before, and I don't expect anybody to agree, but that track is just not for me. I don't like it either. The chorus is really banal to me, especially precious "sa - tuh - lite" at each chorus's end. I don't like how he sings it (like a disaffected teenager, but not in a good way), and it's a boring choice over such obvious chords. If the chords are going to be that straight, do something different (how about no words) or at least don't repeat that same old word again (but this time really slow). Sort of a "first song I wrote" mistake, to my ears. I don't mind the general production and sound. Just checked out the VU version and it's about 100 times better.

Satellite of Love is just sublime - a beautiful happy song with a very sad heart, there's something incredibly moving about the way the song slows down to reveal its inner solitude. Golden Years is so poised and assured, it just glides along. Both fantastic. The weakest track listed is I'm Stranded. It's okay but nothing The New York Dolls didn't do better. I'm guessing this is me. I take it back on 'I'm Stranded', it's a pretty much perfect garage punk record.

I'm still sufficiently underwhelmed by "(I'm) Stranded" for the both of us.

I'm still sufficiently underwhelmed by "(I'm) Stranded" for the both of us. I wish there was a 'dislike' button at moments like this. *sigh* I know it's just music and everyone has their own reactions and preferences, but for me this is one of those songs where if someone says "I don't like it", it feels like they have actually said they don't like one of my kids. Crazy huh.

We’ll always have “Eagle Rock”, Ange.

The bit about 'parking cars' makes me wince.

I love the lyric. It just conjures up something dreamy and mystical, like when you become transfixed by some distant light in the night sky.

No complaints from me, although that Bowie song works best in the context of the album rather than on its own. It was a single!

Thinking about it, there's not a Reed song I love more.

Satellite is great, but wouldn't make a Top 20 Lou songs list for me
