I like that Spahn Ranch track - it reminds me a bit of New Order's 'Doubts Even Here', and wouldn't be out of place on an early Drag City comp. Marvin's a bit boring in comparison.

The drumming on A was fine but it quickly became an unfocused dirge. B sees Marvin in minor gospel-infused mode but his singing is magnificent indeed. Fairly easily

a Thickly Settled is a fine album, and all those dismissing it because of the name of the band should have a look at themselves. As an LA goth/industrial band, why shouldn't they name themselves after a Hollywood landmark? The Beach Boys have more connections with Manson than this lot. Those martial drums are a bit of a turn-off for me, but still gets 4 / 10 b In the Sixties, Marvin Gaye made some great Soul and pop R&B tracks. Then he discovered Cocaine and self-importance and spent the rest of his life living up his own arse and producing disjointed, overlong, over-produced, burbling, soulless, songless shit like this. 2 / 10

B - it has feeling. The other has dead nerves.

There were some bits of A that worked, I thought, the parading drums and monastic backing vox did create a fairly menacing atmosphere. Ultimately it all went on a bit too long though without ever getting more interesting and I tired of it. B is pretty dull. And has a naff guitar. I'd probably rather listen to it than the other, but really. This Cup doesn't have any restrictions on selection at all and people come up with these two?
