The BBC article makes no mention of her losing her only child to skin cancer (which, given he was Terry Melcher and given they talked about some of the difficulties in her life, they should have done). BBC internet reportage is crap these days.

That's sad. She's been around all my sentient life. As for Melcher, it's apparently written into journalistic protocols that if they mention him, you're into Charlie. I also remember at one point (long, long, ago) she was, ahem, 'romantically linked' with Sly Stone.
And she made one timeless pop classic in Move Over Darling

I'm a fan. I saw "Midnight Lace" a whole bunch of times growing up. I hate Rex Harrison's guts to this day but certainly it must share the blame with "Dr.Doolittle" I had an uncle with a bunch of her records but to me she was a movie star. I've seen "Love Me or Leave Me" & the "Man who knew too much" remake many times. I think she had a real engaging quality as an actor. you could see her thinking. this really paid dividends in the suspense movies which I love. "Julie" is another one. there are scenes where she's not afraid yet - she's deciding if she should be afraid. she had a really dumb network sitcom that my family watched for at least 2 seasons. it was one of the first sitcoms I remember where they just changed the entire setup save a few characters. for all her skill at suspense - Doris couldn't tell anything was wrong.
she put out an autobiography my last year of high school and a lot of people talked about it because she talked of having sex before she was married and this was at odds with her "wholesome" image. there's a Peter Bagge comic where somebody says "everybody knows Doris Day blew the entire Les Brown orchestra" I don't know if this would have made Doris Day laugh but it cracks me up. she had a LOT to do with current ideas about being humane to animals. this is no small thing. people used to leave dogs tied up outside all day as alarms. I'm glad that's something you see rarely nowadays.
I almost forgot her "sex comedies". so much for wholesome image. I'm sure those must have been considered pretty racy at the time. her comic timing and chemistry with Rock Hudson was pretty darned good.
R.I.P.

I also remember at one point (long, long, ago) she was, ahem, 'romantically linked' with Sly Stone. Even just the suggestion is *wowsa*! A joke, surely? Mind you, they were both good-looking people - Sly and his sexy voice and cool style and all that. There have been weirder pairings (but not many.)

She dedicated her post-acting career to the welfare of animals, which is not a bad thing.
