I must admit to having a weakness for some 80s MTV new wave (in the American sense of the term) pop. It's not so much nostalgia as I would have rejected it in the strongest terms at the time, but more having a growing appreciation for its brash, bright colours. So I was kind of looking forward to this, but I found the tune a bit dull and Lauper's harsh squawk of a voice was always a testing proposition at the best of times.
When B started I thought we were going to get a predictable old Blues tune (even if Eddy isn't a Blues artist), but as each instrument came in adding its own idiosyncratic colour it really took on a distinctive flavour. Enjoyed this one enormously, like a fine old malt.
You've got my vote B

The Lauper track is simply boring...If it had been one of her more interesting tracks, maybe she'd get the nod against a basic blues number which sounds like the theme from a 90's indie flick...(Hell, if it was "She Bop", I might have voted for it)...Vote B

If boring instrumental blues played by white men is your thing, then I guess B probably makes you feel really good.
Boring instrumental blues played by white men isn't really my thing, so I'm gonna go with A, which could probably have benefited from being played a bit faster, but Cyndi's doing a good job of it.

I thought I'd like the Duane Eddy song more than I did. I don't know why the person didn't pick the Prince original of When You Were Mine. It's one of Prince's best songs and is a precursor to Raspberry Beret and his stuff he wrote for the Bangles. Lauper mangles it, but it's still better than the Duane Eddy song.

I'm curious what possesses someone to pick something like A, of all the thousands of great songs in the world. She really does mangle it, and all the whoops are annoying the first time, let alone the 65th.
B is rather slight, really, and he's got many more interesting tracks, but at least it's a bit of a curio. I tend to reward deep digs if they're even slightly good, which this is.

B's pretty good but it needs a bit of a kick up the arse. And there's too much of those 'Americana' ingredients. With people of Eddy and Lee's pedigree you'd expect better
I agree that A should have picked the Prince original but this is still pretty sweet. Cock stays in trousers THO'

Reading the comments again, I wondered if I hadn't overpraised B so I listened again. Nope, it still sounds really good..bunch of misery guts!

Nice match. I do think there's a strong argument to be made about A that Prince's original was better, but I feel their appeal are very different too. There's an idyllic feminine quality Cyndi manages to evoke which I think gives the track a very different feel to the original and makes it its own thing altogether, and to me at least just as enjoyable too. B's pretty cool too though I feel it sort of comes and goes at the end of the day. A

An interesting match, as both picks seem like really "personal" choices, and I applaud that. While I do enjoy both of them, B is more in my wheelhouse in general.

For some time I had that Cindy album filed under "guilty pleasures", but in the end I saw no reason to feel guilty at all. I understand her singing is not for everybody or everyday, but in that album everything falls nicely in place. B is ok but ultimately light.

If a number of people hadn't already mentioned it was a Prince song, I think I would've googled it, it is very Princey, and very, very 80s. I think her voice is fine, in fact, her performance kinda carries what feels like a fairly weak track. Those echoing guitar strums are nice though.
B is a competent enough example of dull instrumental blues.

I don't think B is boring at all. I think it sounds like soundtrack music. It's the soundtrack of the movie where I spend decades disliking Cyndi Lauper's voice only to reassess in the 2010's. the movie has a sad ending because I hear her 80's stuff again and start disliking her all over again.
