at last a tie i can get my teeth into. there's much to admire about the riperton track but it does end up a bit "muso". too clever for its own good. wagner is just the opposite. raw and alive.

Hmm.
I hate to pull a 'hatz' here, but if A had chosen one of the many Riperton tracks that are far superior to this one, then they would have easily beaten B. It's okay, but man, it ain't great.
B is alright, but nothing special. It's got a good grittiness to it, though, and that'll suffice.

I never really liked Minnie Riperton and I like B a lot.

B doesn't really seem to stretch beyond the typical cliches of the time - probably sounded dated as soon as it was done - but it does have a winning spirit, and keeps my attention a bit more than the (frankly dull) Ripperton track.

When A first started I thought 'here's another blando soul choice', but it grew on me quite a bit as it went on. Gorgeous voice, SUMPTUOUS SOUNDS. It's a good 'un.
But B! what can I say about B?! it's the best thing I've heard so far in this round and possibly even the best thing I've heard in this whole Cup so far! Absolutely my kind of noise. Stirring stuff.

I don't know what to make of this tie. Both have picked tracks in genres I love, but I'm really struggling with both. There's something 'off' about A, like the backing track was played in the wrong key and it makes it an odd listen as if the vocal has been lifted from a completely different tune. It's a Stevie Wonder song but a long way from his best. I'd have gone with "Reasons" from this album. B's not sounding much clearer to me, a bit of a racket. It has attitude, but not much else. A is a brave pick given the board's general antipathy towards jazz funk and it looks like it needs the support.

A is nice Minnie, but B is great-sounding garage punk. Got to give it my vote here.

A is not terribly exciting but it feels good to get some musicianship after previous round. Also it benefits from Minnie sparing us her glass breaking falsetto. B amateurism doesn't feel right afterwards.

Christ, it took less than half a second before I knew this one wasn't going to be for me. Someone's putting far too much sugar on their Weetabix.
Another sub-Nuggets thing? Just how many bands failed to have a hit at the time with this kind of thing?
Feck this dishwater.

A is aural beige. B has at least some blood running through its veins.

Both are OK. No-one’s going to overrate A, I suppose. An unenthusiastic vote for
