perhaps hatz has a point? seldom discussed these days. drake, clark, lee, spence... all seem to have maintained a cult following, whereas parsons' star has fallen again.
maybe time to reacquaint with some old friends? surely there must have been something in him for prime-time byrds to throw their hat into his ring?

The lionization is overblown, and probably is the result of the Gothic back story. And for such a highly revered songwriter, it's interesting that much of his best stuff is either covers or co-writes. But "Hot Burrito #1" is stunning, and comes damn close to moving me to tears every single time. Nice to be reminded of it occasionally.
For that matter, so's this (another co-write):
Maybe the fair thing to say is that he's overrated as a visionary. He's certainly been a great interpreter at times. But as a country-rock originator, I think his influence is way overstated.

He also does a great job on this - probably the best version of this oft-covered gem, including the original:

I think both The Gilded Palace Of Sin and Grievous Angel are very close to perfect.
Sweetheart Of The Rodeo would have been much-improved if he had sung as many of the leads as he was supposed to have. "Ruined the Byrds"? - I dunno. I think The Byrds As We Knew Them were gonna be over and done the second Crosby and Clark were both gone anyway.
G.P. and Safe At Home both come off as kinda half-assed, though both contain some gems.
And forget the folkie stuff.

He might have been overrated at one point. He sure isn’t now.
I can think of at least a dozen tracks of his that I love dearly (and I’d place ‘She’ right up there with ‘Hot Burrito #2’). A good part of that is down to his voice. Whatever else, he sure could sing.

Fantastic song. The alternate take of it, from the reissue, is even better.

It's plodding country rock with, unfortunately, a lot more country than rock. I would rather hear this sort of thing from The Eagles, at least with them you get a decent tune. To think a band can go from "She Don't Care about Time" to this..it breaks one's heart. And I'm not anti all country rock btw, the Dillard & Clark is wonderful..but Parsons was a middle of the road hack: Kenny Rogers with a better tailor and drug dealer.
