B is a waste of fucking space. clearly a poster taking the piss.
A which would have provided stiff competition even if it's a little unoriginal.

Eek, my anti-country barriers have been raised. I had no idea The Monkees released anything like this, it sounds like it should soundtrack Smokey & The Bandit, or The Cannonball Run. I'd almost forgotten the existence of that film till I just wrote that sentence.I guess the guitar is quite pretty, but I'm finding it hard to think positive thoughts.
Nino looks like a fat Danny Dyer, and sounds like he's being led to the gallows. I'm guessing someone's thinking outside the box here. I have literally no idea what to make of this so far. I know I don't like his pompous stare. Is that bowed guitar? Or cello? It's a lot better when he isn't singing, I find.
Well, if you'd asked me 10 minutes ago if I wanted to hear The Monkees do a country and western track, or listen to some Spanish arty thing, that may well have over-earnest vocals, I'd have said "Spanish arty thing". Nothing here has changed my mind. B

Boy - there are Monkees songs I like more, and this seems a bit of a blindfolded random choicea, but I'm just not buying in to B at all. I have no problem with artiness or ethnic influence or even most combos of the two, but it just sounds stiff to me. It's not pleasant listening. A lot of skill went into it, but to what end?
Anyway, A.

An unenthusiastic Aalthough it's one of the least interesting Monkees songs around.
B reminded me a bit of late period Scott Walker. I'm never sure how I should approach stuff like this really. I can't ever imagine myself listening to this for pleasure. It's a brave pick I guess, but also a very indulgent one.

This is a really good and interesting match, even though neither is really totally my thing. A is a deeper and more personal Monkees cut, something i always appreciate as the big hits and best songs often get traipsed out so often. It's good fun, and the guitars are lovely. I think B can seem quite confronting at first listen, but for me at least it isn't; remembering Miles Davis' 'Saeta' off Sketches of Spain, i'm keeping that form in my head as i listen to this, and the nuances in the music show themselves pretty clearly despite me having no Spanish. It's very emotionally deep and dense, but i'm expecting that and can appreciate it for what it is. Maybe Os can tell us what it's about later, he'll know what the guy is singing about. Shame i don't like his voice more - fishy is right, i think i like it more when he isn't singing, and the music just takes control.
Ok, a tough choice, but i'm giving this to B for the interesting listen.

I'm not a flamenco expert, but El Niño de Elche doesn't sound like an especially good singer to my ears. However, I must point out that this pick (not mine) raised my interest quite a lot. For those who do not know, saetas (a flamenco sub-genre) are typically sung from the balconies during the Easter processions (don't forget that in Spain the crucifixion is more celebrated than the resurrection, odd as it may seem). Miles’ Saeta is an excellent interpretation of the popular stuff. Normally subject is religious, but here it is a love song (Fange I'm sorry, but as it happens to me always with flamenco, I understand about half of the words, what I got was that he’s singing about seeing the girl he’s in love with approaching from a distance). What I did find most interesting is the arrangement. I was kind of surprised when some of you used the word 'arty', but after listening to it, I find that quite appropriate. The use of strings in this context is quite unusual, and I did like it well. Same with the piano in the second part (or song). I did like the Monkees pick too, but I have to give it to

Been allowing myself one abstain if needed per round and think I'll use it here...Abstain...
Never been a Monkees fan, so twangy Monkees isn't going to cut it and I'm not feelin' B...

A Way more Monkees and pop than country, and with the Nes on vocals. I'm not familiar with the Better Beatles' albums, so this is fresh to me, too, and very enjoyable 6 / 10 B Prejudices on the line, here. I'm not particularly interested in anything in a Romance language, or anything that smacks even slightly of opera, the worst genre of music known to man, even worse than prog. Still, when the Fat Man shuts up, we do get some mildly interesting, albeit vaguely proggy, sounds. I listened to it all, and the voice is much more agreeable in the second half, and that hesitant piano towards the end has its moments, but I wouldn't want to listen to it again, although cheers to Osgood for the explication of the form. 4 / 10

I like the Monkees track fine, but not sure why it would get the nod here when you consider their catalog. Can't really get with B
