Just got £60 for a Dead or Alive 12" single. Also, if any of you are Sisters of Mercy lovers who have recently found some change down the back of the sofa, I have a NM version of their first single up www.discogs.com/sell/release/717495?ev=rboooooooooooof

I'm amazed that something like that would fetch that kind of money...I should be dealing records! I don't know who the market would be for something like that ( I know they had a SAW pre-history as a more alternative band, but I wouldn't have thought they'd be particularly sought after by people who are into post-punk. Still you only need one person to pay that kind of money don't you?

It's a rarity, apparently, always fetches around that sort of money. www.discogs.com/Dead-Or-Alive-Turn-Around-And-Count-2-Ten-The-Pearl-And-Dean-I-Had-A-Disco-Dream-Mix/release/544665But I know what you mean: collectors, eh, cuh. I mean, I have a record collection, but it's just stuff I accumulated following my ears. I wanted the sound, everything else was secondary, although I often bought records unheard because I liked the sleeves or knew the artists. But there are people out there who have freely admitted to me that they want to collect every label and sleeve variation, or every pressing of every record by their favourite artist. One guy wanted demo copies of the UK issue of every Tamla record released in the 1960s, whether on Oriole, Stateside or Tamla-Motown. Mind you, if one of these guys wants to shovel more than £200 in my hands for a mint copy of Pristine Christine by the Sea Urchins just because it's the first release on the Sarah label, who am I to disappoint .

I was offered a copy of The Sisters' debut 7" for £50 by the owner of X-Records in Bolton years ago. Think I should've took him up on it.

I find dealing or valuing records very confusing though...which is one reason I don't go in for it. I just looked up my 12" of Atmosphere on discogs and couldn't find any version earlier than 1988,even though I bought my one in 1980!

Cheers! I'm always slightly surprised by how little most records go for, but then you have to consider even a minor independent hit would've sold in the thousands.

There are a lot of really good records that, even in near mint condition, are only worth pence *I'll probably make bowls and clocks out of many of them

They're my records. But yes, price-check first

I was talking to my neighborhood used record store owner about trying to get a copy of the Slits Cut and told him how much it was going on Discogs. He said that just because they ask for the price doesn't mean they'll get it and some rube may buy it.
I asked him to put aside a copy when he got one in and I paid $20 for mine.

What your mate says is true to a degree, but I think it's much easier to value records than some other things. If you look at most things on discogs there's a consistency to the prices, with some variance due to condition of course. I sell glass and in some areas what people ask for varies so wildly that it becomes almost totally subjective. I think that's because some areas are so niche that it's hard to come to a natural market value. With records there are so many collectors out there that a natural consensus forms over value.

Yeah fashion always shapes the market, in any field really. I was reading about the prices for Elvis memorabilia - prices are really falling because the collectors themselves are dying off or are looking to sell off their collection as they downsize. And of course that means more hits the market which will drive down prices further.
International shipping can be a problem for UK dealers because the prices over here are so expensive, it really puts us at a disadvantage when selling internationally.

I think you're right. I just bought a copy of Dwight Twilley's Sincerely and the T-Bone Burnett EP, Trap Door, and all the prices for similar condition vinyl is about the same.
