Nothing against the Lyres - one of the better children of you-know-what -but A is pure class. I love "The Fool," obviously, but this lesser-known period (which also included a great "Fool" remake with fuzztone) is full of gems as well. This is how you...you know the rest.

A was like listening to some old bloke at the bar tell you a story, you get a bit impatient but you have to keep listening till the end. Musically there was not much of interest going on, it kind of felt like a 'not as good' Johnny Cash in the end. B has the same kind of dutiful, careful approach to garage rock as the class swot doing his French homework. It's all very accurate, but kind of lifeless. It seems to utterly miss the wild side of garage, which, of course, is the whole point. In the same way bad musicians shouldn't be allowed to play jazz, good musicians shouldn't be allowed to play garage rock.

Finally after six matches we get to a round where the songs don't appear to have been submitted by random people just dragged in off the street!
A is fine, I like that kind of country with a bit of playfulness, a bit of bounce. I've heard the name but I think that's the first thing I've knowingly heard by the man. I might investigate further...
The Lyres were one of the only garage revivalists who revisited that genre without sounding naff. It isn't up to the quality of 'Help You Ann', but I suppose that one was avoided as it's an old BCB chestnut. This is good stuff.

A should be the theme song for a Tarantino film, which works enough...Vote A

A's new to me and i enjoyed it a lot.
B holds too many good memories for me not to vote for it.

A's obviously really familiar to me, being a big collector of obscure country n western tracks. I like the guitar as kazoo thing. Kinda lost interest though after a minute or so.
B's got a very 80s sounding vocal for this kind of thing. Everything sounds really weedy, that guitar solo is someone twanging an elastic band, and that cheap keyboard sound is really repetitive. They seem to be aiming to be as boring as Keane or Coldplay, while playing Electric Prunes songs. I don't get it.

Kinda tough choice. There's been too many garage picks for me to vote now for garage revivalists, even if I have very nice memories of a Lyres concert. A is surely new to me and I did like the words, the singing and that guitar sound in the background. Think I'll go for it.

Oh B. Why why why would you not choose the version from "On Fyre" That would've sealed the deal for me. This one's too ropey and lacks energy. Anyway, A is pretty cool, in a Lee Hazlewood kinda way. A

A is a hazy, Lee Hazelwood country lope and very nice with it. Nice pick. Help You Ann is a definitive BCB Cup warhorse - credit to NO of NO - and assuredly ace. I suspected it was a bit of a one-off and this in truth is far from that standard. Its not unpleasant at all, mind.

That Sanford Clark track is a classic. ‘Tis a recidivist, withal.
B is nothing special and is overpowered here.
