I just watched Hendrix's set (it's an extra on the Criterion Monterey Pop box) - it's almost perfect.*
It seems like all his years on the circuit built up to this point - where he could play guitar like the rest of us sign our names - and from here on out he lost something. The experimentation diluted his fire, there would be no more 'Purple Hazes'.
That debut really does sound like something's scorching. It stands alone.
*'Wild Thing' and 'Sgt. Pepper's...' are turned into dull three-chord thrashes, his own material was so much more inventive and exciting

It's my favorite Hendrix live recording. But aside from "Wild Thing" I don't enjoy watching it. He's trying SO hard to blow everybody's mind (behind his back!! - between his legs!! - with his TEETH!!) that it's just embarrassing.
But, yeah, the music... there's something very pure about it. And unlike some of the later live recordings, he wasn't yet sick of his own Greatest Hits.

He's trying SO hard to blow everybody's mind (behind his back!! - between his legs!! - with his TEETH!!) that it's just embarrassing. Yeah, his playing alone was pyrotechnic enough! and then the guitar 'sacrifice' at the end! it's kind of small-scale, the little fire on the stage where (no doubt) not many could see it. It's funny to hear his between-songs banter - how many times does he say 'groovy'?! but such a cool, sweet man. Lots of respect for Mitch, too - he's absolutely slaughtering those drums the whole way through. 'Bob Dylan's grandmother' isn't too bad either

I saw a little piece of that guitar at the Met exhibit this weekend. I hope it was real. Like seeing a piece of the true cross or a saint's collarbone or something.
Groovy.

It’s a fabulous, superhuman juggernaut of a performance. I mean he comes on stage with a pink feather boa and he still looks cool as fuck. Yeah he’s trying hard but Hendrix made all this shit look as effortless as doing a poo.

Not Hendrix (I'll edit the thread title) but Monterey outtakes in decent quality:
The Mamas and Papas set is especially good. So loveable!
