Difficult to pinpoint, but I'd say it was pretty much defined by Klaus Dinger on Neu!'s debut in 1972. Sometimes credit is given to Jaki Liebezeit, who's a phenomenal drummer, but to me it's all about Dinger's rhythm's even late on in his career, when he wasn't drumming, his music was characterised by it. Good shout from fange too, can't believe I never really considered that as being motorik before. My own suggestion is the Silver Apples. I'm not sure they actually remained as insistent on any track as the best motorik, but as a 60s band actually making the drums a key distinctive factor, and interesting, they fit by my logic. And that's all that counts to me.
