These guys had a fascinating career, as equally happy on Blue Note as Motown, writing and producing disco hits or producing expansive jazz-funk. They were key figures in adapting jazz for a looser, funkier 70s and big figures for me. Here's four of their best known tracks - vote for your favourite. Feel free to comment or post your own selections.

Wow, I thought me and G would be the only ones interested in replying to a thread about the Mizells.
Thank Gawd Jeff's back!
I like all of these of course, but if I had to rank them it would probably be in reverse order to what they are now - 'MIMS', 'HRD', '(FL) D' and 'LCC'. The first 3 are among my favourite tracks of the '70s, fabulous. 'LCC' is good, but I think the track 'Shifting Gears' off that Johnny H. album is even better.

Great choice! I guess that's Bobbi again on flute. It's still got that live, raw feel.

No, the Gears sessions flautist was Roger Glenn, who played with Mongo Santamaria and Donald Byrd too.

Hell, yeah, these are all great tracks. Dominoes is the one though.
Their shit is so groovy and natural. What's even better it drives jazz purist types up the wall.

I'm always coming across reviews on AMG which damn this stuff with faint praise for not supposedly being authentic or for being a sell out or whatever. But to my mind it's one of the most fertile and exciting periods for jazz there was.

I'll go with Donald Byrd almost every time and did here too.

Anything, but the Byrd, it is obviously well done and well played but it is commercial dentist office music ultimately.
