I've a chance to see him tonight in Newcastle but I'm not really familiar with his stuff beyond hearing bits in record shops and on youtube.
Any fans here? Anyone seen him live?

Never seen him live, though I'd love to. I'm guessing that he wouldn't be your kind of thing. His album Peasant was big in EOY lists in 2017, and was genuinely superb, but quite odd. The other stuff I have by him ranges from odd to borderline unlistenable museum pieces (The Glass Trunk). I don't have you pegged down as a big folkie, and certainly not a when the folkie in question mangles vowels and guitar lines.

The erstwhile BCB-er Heilan Coo and I saw him on a sunny afternoon a few years ago, at a festival. I liked him, but yeah, I doubt he's your sort of thing John.

I adore Peasant, it's something that's on regular rotation in my house. I think I've only listened to everything else he's made once though.
I had the chance to see him live a few months back but unfortunately I had to cancel at the last minute. However I will be seeing him this summer at the Supersonic Festival. He's a bloke with an acoustic guitar and he's part of a llineup that includes Godflesh, Tim Hecker, and even Merzbow. That ought to tell you exactly how he approaches folk music.

He's playing with a full band.
I'm definitely going. I'm kind of excited. I'll report back later!

I'd consider scouting for a ticket if it were a better week for me, he's odd but likeable.

I'm back.
Odd but likeable, yeah.
I'm interested in what there is in a person's make-up that leads them to create music like this.
The support act were fun.

His new album is a bit...difficult. Complete with four songs, one of which runs 41 minutes.
A lengthy Facebook post by a friend of mine compared him to Robert Wyatt. Can't say I hear it.
I'm intrigued by the new album, but to me it sounds more like Scott Walker's 'arty' stuff than anything by Wyatt. Wouldn't have pegged John as a fan.
"Horse and Rider" is great, though. My favorite song by him so far, probably...
