Indeed.
A fantastic track on its own, but even better following "Laughing" on the LP - the way that intro definitively swings free of the tension of the previous track... it's like The Beatles hurtling down that fire escape to the opening bars of "Can't Buy Me Love".
(Bet no-one saw THAT comparison coming!)

As the B52s, Devo, Ramones, Bunnymen, etc., have all seen their boats rise with new generational interest, Pere Ubu as worthy as they are, frustratingly have not. I am sure David Thomas' 'quaint' views have probably hurt.

Just look at discogs, first pressings for all these bands have risen dramatically, Ubu's are still quite reasonable. Unless, I'm misreading things (which is possible), The B52 debut LP highest sale for original pressing is £26.59, whereas The Modern Dance is £132.95 www.discogs.com/The-B-52s-The-B-52s/release/508401www.discogs.com/Pere-Ubu-The-Modern-Dance/release/436909But anyway, discogs prices are a strange reference for cultural impact, unless Trader Horne are somehow the most culturally relevant band of the day. The Ramones are clearly a much bigger band who have broken into popular culture via t-shirt sales. But I'd reckon The B-52s and Echo and the Bunnymen are bands who had slightly higher visibility at some point, and are just as irrelevant to most people as Pere Ubu. Devo, I prefer their debut to The Modern Dance, and I find 'em very similar. Devo really did suck afterwards though.
