This place and its taste is going downhill rapidly.
Ken Bruce would win music presenter of the year here. Tsk.
Anyway Sonic youth v the Eagles.

Madness had a musicality. There are often some beautiful chord and key changes in there.

I like both bands a good deal, but voted for SY back in the day.

Maybe.
Sonic youth are one of those bands that can genuinely thrill and surprise you. If they didn't exist, you would wish that they did.
Sonic youth v Randy Newman, anyone ?

I like good singles, and Madness were one of the great singles bands of all time.
Sonic Youth are too busy with moody photo shoots and playing at being arty to actually produce anything listenable. Beloved of the kind of people who are more interested in the album covers and the band's coolness rating than the actual music.
I've never actually listened to them but I'm sure I'm right.

They don't play Sonic Youth at Weddings do they? I don't think this is really the "Stamp of Quality" that you seem to be implying it is. Madness was a great singles band, for sure, but SY have made a lot more music that means a lot more to me. Plus, 'Dirty Boots'.

On paper, it's SY, but 9 out of 10 times these days, I'd rather listen to Madness.
A fantastic run of singles. There's obviously a nostalgia element, but the artistry is there. They're in that classic lineage that goes from the Kinks through to Blur and The Libertines.

The ability to make great singles is often underrated. 3. Buy some shoe polish.

SY are one of the greatest bands of all time. Loved them well before seeing any "Moody Photos". Their amazing run of quality albums is tough to match. Madness? Few decent singles here and there, I guess. Could go a lifetime without hearing "Our House" again and be comfortable, though.

Madness have a lot in common with The Small Faces. With both the laddish good time zaniness can hide sophisticated musicianship and a reflective melancholia. Ultimately the struggle to keep both elements balanced destroyed both bands.

Sonic youth v Randy Newman, anyone ? Don't give Davey any more ideas. Not fair to Sonic Youth. Obviously they aren’t in Randy’s league.
