Not a big fan of either. But one of them is fun.

Not a big fan of either. But one of them is fun. Although Madness are at their best arguably when they're not 'fun' but wistful and melancholic. For example this was my own favourite single of theirs - a moody, overcast slice of anguish, but with a gorgeous chorus.
I probably underrate them actually, I should get to know the albums better.

I'm not a particular fan of either. I'd rate One Step Beyond and Night Boat to Cairo higher than anything by Sonic Youth, but I reckon if I was stuck on a desert island with only Madness to listen to, I'd kill myself within a couple of hours, whereas I could probably survive for days without being annoyed by SY.
Are Sonic Youth really that not fun? They seemed fairly fun to me.

Sonic Youth all day, any day...Madness are ok, but beyond 'One Step Beyond', they lose me...SY were amazing for one hell of a long time...

Sonic Youth were the 80s version of prog. The appeal is very similar.

Madness had some excellent pop songs.
Sonic Youth are a bunch of chancers

Sonic Youth, in a landslide. And they DID write poppy songs, despite what others are saying above - it's just that they mostly made non-poppy songs.

I'm torn. I like both. Madness are like eating potato chips. Tasty in a pinch and kinda satisfying for awhile.
To bludgeon the metaphor, Sonic Youth are kinda like fancy crackers and brie. A little more substantial and the taste lingers a little more on the tongue.
I also love how Sonic Youth fans defend them. I was discussing some other group who's a little harder to define and the fan was very adamant about how great they were.

both are good bands but not really much a fan of either. Both had their moments but bored of both after a few songs.

I'd much rather listen to Sonic Youth, but I'll admit that I don't know much Madness beyond a couple of tunes.

Back to the primal sludge that spawned them?
Who cares?
