Hve been given these albums a listen in the last few days. With the exception of Night Ride Home, which I like, I was not familiar with them (bar a couple of tracks) and they have mostly left me cold. All those loud drums, duets and attempts at mainstream pop sound so alien to her that I don't think they deserve further trying. Night Ride Home does sound like her being back on track, same as later records.
Am I wrong? Am I missing any point? Should I play them again? Regarding Joni, I always try to be open-minded, it has happenned in the past that first few plays were not enough.

I listened to them recently and found a few bits and pieces that cut through, but in general I agree with you.
I will say that I love Turbulent Indigo so it's not like she fell off a cliff or anything. But there are a lot of questionable production decisions on those albums for me.

She’s one if those artists where there seems an obvious cut off point (hejira?).
I know nothing of her later albums but honestly don’t feel like I’m missing out

Yeah, for as much as I love mid 70s Joni, I'm beyond petrified of the 80s records.

I remember liking Chalk Mark okay, but, yeah, listening to any of these just has the effect of making me want to listen to Proper Joni Mitchell.

they seem sort of half hearted to me. I absolutely love her run of albums from "song to a seagull" up to & including "mingus". Her last two on that run feature what I think is some of her very best singing. It seems to me that there was an expectation on those Geffen albums. I know Geffen was always trying to point her in a "commercial" direction. whatever the reason something is seriously missing for me. I like "turbulent indigo" too and think she sounds more comfortable in her own skin. maybe I just like the songs better. anyway, she sounds more engaged one way or the other.

I know nothing of her later albums but honestly don’t feel like I’m missing out Hissing of the Summer Lawns is quite good, and both Don Juan Reckless Daughter and Mingus can be classified as difficult but rewarding. My problem is specifically with those first three Geffen records, Night Ride Home and Turbulent Indigo are quite nice. Both Sides Now is a different animal but still worth every note. I yet have to try Taming the Tiger, Travelogue and Shine.

... I yet have to try Taming the Tiger, Travelogue and Shine. Done. Excellent stuff all of them. Mature Joni in what seems artistic freedom all along. At first listen I found Travelogue both the most demanding and the most rewarding of the three. I would go for a physical copy of it but unfortunately it seems to be out of print (anybody knows why?)

I got Travelogue as a gift for someone as an introduction. FAIL. bad choice but I fucking love it. her voice was still in pretty great shape and she's coaxing things out of the songs that might not have been there when she was younger.
it's a re-evaluation of her songs by her with sometimes breathtaking arrangements. it's pretty dense but it's substantial. I wish I'd bought it for myself instead of somebody else.

Yeah, for as much as I love mid 70s Joni, I'm beyond petrified of the 80s records. They probably have top-notch "songwriting" on them, though. That's the thing. Songwriting doesn't really stand alone. Interpretation is very important too. Think of the classical pieces you (not you Loveless, anyone reading this) heard and didn't really love until you heard THE version you like. It matters.
