Youtube is a goldmine of lectures/shows/channels. Why watch TV in all honesty when you can watch a lecture? This is an interesting one. Markowitz has released a book on "the Meritocracy trap" - that meritocracy is a sham. Here's a review of the book quillette.com/2019/10/09/the-meritocracy-trap-a-review/

Anyone who has any sort of mild intrigue/interest/what the hell are they talking about on the whole "Feminism/Intersectionality" and Leftist Academic thought should really watch this one because what Lindsay & Boghossian do is both hilarious and quite staggering.

The Grievance one is really something. We've got a battle on our hands against this shit.

Nice to see Toby providing his usual balanced selection.

So you didn't watch the "meritocracy is a sham" lecture then?
Or the Joker analysis from both Right and Left wing perspectives?
Or the one about a pair of left-leaning academics who produced a series of sham academic papers such as "canine rape culture in urban dog parks" for review to respected academic journals for publication (which then, staggeringly, got accepted). Or the one where they cut and pasted Chapter 12 of Mein Kampf, removed all the mentions of the NSDAP, put "intersectionality" in them and got to a point where their paper was almost ready for review?
I mean, come on G, you've not even watched them. If you're going to make a comment, make an informed one.

In the Grievance video one of them is left wing, the other is a classical liberal apparently whose never voted Republican (according to wiki) and the presenter is a conservative I believe.
You can’t just dismiss this as some right wing thaang. It’s not I’m afraid. There are many people on the left, in the centre and on the right who recognise the problem and malign influence of the “regressive left” within academia (although many are quiet because they are scared to speak out) and how various ideas and theories have entered the mainstream that need to be challenged. This is what I was getting at when we were discussing this a wee while back.
Pointing this out does not make you a paranoid, right wing loony although it’s easy to label someone as such to dismiss their concerns. This is a real problem and it will only get worse when those who have swallowed the kool aid assume positions of increasing power and influence over the years.
Something has gone very, very wrong.

Anyone who has any sort of mild intrigue/interest/what the hell are they talking about on the whole "Feminism/Intersectionality" and Leftist Academic thought should really watch this one because what Lindsay & Boghossian do is both hilarious and quite staggering. They kept agreeing with each other! It was a pseudo-debate and, as such, bad TV. All three speakers nurture the same grievance in broadly equal measure. They’re all pissed off because it’s no longer them (white, male, Western etc.) who are calling the identity shots. The boot’s on the other foot now and they fucking hate it. I wish one of them - or even all of them - could tell us the difference between their own identity politics and the identity politics of the “regressive left”, which they keep telling us poses a terrible threat, without telling us to what or whom. In the future, “you will look at your neighbour and judge them by the color of their skin” says the man in the middle, in the throes of a massive irony bypass. It’s desperately poor stuff.

I don't think it's that though really . It's not really about their grievances with identity politics in particular. It's more that Identity politics uses academia in the same way that religion uses scripture. It's "all in the scientific evidence"- in the same way that a Christian zealot will quote the Old Testament as a way of getting their point across.
But when the Academy is rotten there is a problem. And I see a massive problem in academics selecting desperately poor texts and allowing them through peer review to become part of the hivemind. We do trust "science" in a way that we don't elsewhere, and you and I also discussed the problem with "scientism" when I was in Portugal.
I talked before about the fact that the Academy is mostly left-wing. There are Conservative redoubts and islands, but I'd argue strongly that left-wing politics is so prevalent amongst intellectuals and academics in most of the Western world. Foucault, Derrida and Levi-Strauss are having their moment long after they died and it's a big problem.

This is the sort of thing I like to watch on youtube - James Brown confuses Alfred Hitchcock by going on randomly about a film he didn't direct!

One of my favorite is Hot Ones where famous people eat buffalo wings cooked in escalating rounds of hot sauce. The interviews aren't bad either.

You ever see the biopic? I like it, but the first scenes when Brown walks into a gym with a gun I would think are pretty realistic.

Nah but as biopics go there's a lot to get your teeth into there. How dark did it get?

I can remember when that happened and everybody was saying how sad it was to see him like that, I remember thinking "I don't know, he seems pretty happy to me!" Livin' in America!
