David Palmer, who joined late in the Can't Buy A Thrill sessions after Donald Fagen learned (to his chagrin) that they would be expected to tour. Fagen was a reluctant vocalist to begin with and didn't think he could carry a whole set for a whole tour, so somebody called Palmer in. He sang "Dirty Work" and "Brooklyn" and some backing vocals on the album, and then toured with them. I'm not sure how he came to leave the group. On subsequent tours they had someone named Royce Jones singing some of the songs.

"Hey! Here it is, the unknown, newly discovered DAT tape that was in the Roger Nichols Media collection. We aren't sure, but this could be a copy of the rough mix. But DATs are awful and it sounds muddy and we had to de-noise it. Help us Peter Jackson!

And for fun, I made a little video slide show about us transferring the tape, what i have been personally going through which was weirdly in line with what this song is about, some moments of the chaos of having to lovingly archive and store dad's stuff after he died, and some more never before seen home video filmed by Roger!

A book review from Greil Marcus' latest column:

. Alex Pappademas & Joan Lemay, Quantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers, and Other Sole Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan (University of Texas). This is as imaginative a book as anyone has written about pop music, and maybe the funniest. Pappademas, who seemingly knows not only every written or recorded variant of every song but also everything Walter Becker (1950-2017) and Donald Fagen (1948-) ever said about anything (he does misspell Jerry Leiber’s name), fashions a history of the band by creating biographies of the characters in their songs, bringing out more than the songs say themselves, spinning the men and women from Rikki to Jack to Dr. Wu into their own worlds and out of them into the world of the charts and the millions of inhabitants of the radio world trying to picture them (“They’re practicing to be a marginal band that somehow still has seven platinum albums”) — as Lemay, with amateurish illustrations of everyone, doesn’t.

Pappademas starts with a one-page history of the band from the beginning of the Becker-Fagen songwriting partnership in the late sixties to the present, with Fagen, as I write, performing as Steely Dan in Denver on tour with the Eagles. But then the writing takes over, and the pleasures, the pure joy, of what Pappademas does with words, is what brings the story to life. Again and again, often in a single sentence, the history-of-the-band is rolled over: “a lounge act playing the indigenous music of casinos.” “The first seven Steely Dan albums constitute the Great American Ford and Carter Administration Novel, unlike John Updike’s book about the chad Gerald Ford and the virgin James Buchanan, which is only okay.” “They were marked at the cellular level by a specific and finite moment in a jazz history, when Charlie Parker discovered a parallel universe inside the melody of ‘Cherokee’ in the late ’40s and ended about three minutes into A Love Supreme.” “Mr. Steely Dan . . . is both Donald and Walter and neither; he’s the sum of their experiences and has also been to places they’ve never been, tried things they’d never try, things they put you in jail for trying.” And he takes it from there.
