Now I think Wonder was patchy, although at his best he was great and is certainly a major artist.

I think Wonder's best was way better than Bowie, but Bowie was more consistent, even though he was constantly adjusting his image and music.

Both great in the 70s, not so much after. Great songcraft, both of them! But not as good as Tom Verlaine.
If comparing them head-to-head, the decider for me is that Stevie was better in the 60s.

I think the saccharinity seeped in by about...1964, maybe? "You are the Sunshine of My Life" is lovely, but it's plenty saccharine too. Fulfillingness First Finale is his best, imo, though Innervisions runs it close.

I love him to bits. Saw him perform on two occasions and it's STILL a real "Holy fuck, did that really happen?" memory. If someone said "I'll let you see Elvis if you give me one of those Stevie shows", I'd have to decline.
He was BIG in my childhood environment. If you consider that I was 3 when Innervisions came out and 6 when Songs... landed, you can just about start to imagine the ubiquity of his music.
I think he's the only person where someone could say "I think I like it better than the Beatles version" and I'd say "I can see that."

Oh, he's my fucking dude AND I love the sentimental ballads ("My Cherie Amour", "Superwoman", "I Love Every Little Thing About You", "You and I", "I Believe", "Knocks Me Off My Feet", "Overjoyed", etc.), but...I sure hope I never have to legally defend the person who claims Wonder didn't have "a ballad problem."

Oh, man! I've forgotten just how good his "We Can Work it Out" is! I wouldn't disagree too strenuously if someone claimed that as one of his great moments.
Also, it might be my love for transitional albums coming into play here, but I've always thought Where I'm Coming From deserves more consideration than it usually gets.

I do find, and this isn't directed at you at all, that when we talk about him we tend not to go into that much detail about the songs.

Yeah, I've been looking for a copy of Where... with the cover intact, and I wince a bit at the prices.
But...agreed - there's something pretty cool happening in his music ca. 69-71 that DOES get overlooked a bit.

His saccharine side is a major drawback for me. It's why I've always paid more attention to people like Curtis Mayfield instead.
