If an air raid siren went off where you are and you had a nice bomb shelter in the basement, would you not dive down there as soon as possible or would you go and kick the ball around in the park?
I may be a bit of a nervous Nellie but I'm pretty sure I'd seek cover.
If it turned out the alarm was just faulty, I'd still rather have spent a little time sheltered in my bunker. No question, for me anyway.

Whilst I get the comparison, I don't think lockdowns are the answer unless the evidence is absolutely compelling that people of all ages are affected by a disease and that the effect of the disease is strikingly similar - ie that the mortality rate is, say, 20% across all groups. Many people caught Covid and shrugged it off like they would a particularly nasty cold.
There was little to no evidence that children were affected in any significant way for example. And yet we shut all the schools.
The big question really for me on all of this is : what sort of risk are we going to accept when living with disease? It is very difficult for us to eradicate diseases as cures and vaccines traditionally can take many years to develop and test properly. Diseases will occur, people will spread them, some people will die and many people will develop immunity. At what point do we as a society say "right, let's lockdown". Because the problem is that the cat is out of the bag now. As humans we have adapted to a certain extent with living in such conditions because some of us went through this sort lifestyle. Many people arguably are happier with it. Once you have created the behavioural models and the societal apparatus for lockdowns, the tendency to reach for hitting that button will become harder to resist.

If you have a solution that means hospitals can cope with the numbers of people needing intensive care, and you don't write off the vulnerable as unworthy of life, what is it?

At what age group would a 20% death rate be acceptable?

And what was Sweden's death rate compared to the countries next to them that had a more aggressive lockdown? The answer is: a lot higher. Hindsight isn't exactly 20/20 here. Were mistakes made? Almost certainly. But Jimbo and his lot were saying this exact same stuff in April 2020 when the body bags were piling up. And their 'evidence' that it 'worked' was piss-poor then, and it's piss-poor now. To suggest that anyone wasn't grasping at straws in the Pre-vax era is a rather absurd conceit. The only people who get to say 'I told you so' as far as I'm concerned are the ones who said 'a vaccine, as quickly and efficiently as possible'. They're the only ones who have solid evidence on their side. Everyone else is still playing politics.

While down there we would hear the caterwaling of those who didn't. they wouldn't be kicking a ball around in the park. they would be hollering for somebody's SCALP.

Well I've spent the weekend in bed, feel so week, projectile vomiting, sleeping for 20 hour stretches, shivering even though I've got about 5 jumpers on. Don't think this long covid will ever go.

I hope it's not. either way, thanks for sharing,G. best wishes.
things are weird in L.A. right now. the City is on the verge of declaring that COVID is over in Los Angeles. Meanwhile we are being warned of yet another variant.I don't mask always but I do frequently. There is much less outright hostility from non-mask wearers but a definite sense of "why are you wearing it f you don't have to?" I need reminding that it's not really over since we all want it to be over so badly.

I hope you feel better soon G. That sounds awful. Are you sure it's long covid? I'm pretty sure yeah. It was weirdly similar to the first time I had it when I went from feeling fine to feeing really weak and ill in the space of half an hour. I am better today apart from a nasty cough, but my taste buds are all fucked up. Everything tastes really salty or bitter. I hope to God it returns to normal soon, because I don't think i'd be able to cope with not tasting things properly.

Still feeling pretty rotten and can't get rid of the foul metallic taste in my mouth. My whole body feels like it's been poisoned. Definitely worse than the first bout I had in 2020.

Hadn't noticed any hostility over here on the Westside..About 20% of the people in stores are still masked..(And should be)..Our separate Covid tents at the ER are currently up at UCLA, which means the numbers are still high enough to warrant them..So, if people don't like me wearing a mask in public, fuck 'em..Let's see them try and remove it..

Would it even be possible for China to know the full extent of it yet? I'm not sure what would be gained from a deliberate national cover up. That would become obvious and the blow back would be phenomenal. Approaching 4 years since this all blew up. What a fucking farrago the whole thing has been. Yesterday I saw someone driving in a car wearing a mask and thought "FFS".
