I think people are building igloos out of them.

Nadine Dorries has got it. So we can safely assume that a lot more people have it than is officially known. If she dies from it - and of course I hope that doesn't happen - then that'll probably take us into the next stage of panic and I expect all sorts of negative consequences. I guess because she's a nurse she's healthy, but she IS in her sixties. Today's the first day I've had a real sense of people's nerves - a bit like JSJ, going to the supermarket I noticed depleted stocks and people filling their trolleys with non-perishables. I'm going to start making either really early (6 am) or really late (midnight) shopping trips to avoid crowds. And staying in the flat at all other times. Strange days.

If you want to wipe your bottom in Chicago, you'd better be well connected.

You think I should let virus fears keep me away from seeing Itzhak Perlman in rehearsal tomorrow morning? There'll be a lot of people there... Itzhak Perlman ended up cancelling his appearance on account of coronavirus. Pinchas Zuckerman was called in as a last minute substitute. Like I even get out of bed for Pinchas Fucking Zuckerman. BAH. (I skipped it out of low-level concern about crowds these days anyway)

It's quite possible.
My wider point was that as soon as there's a high-profile death from coronavirus in this country, then we'll get even more media fuss than we already have, and that's going to be damaging in all sorts of ways. It's THAT that's worrying, really, more than the risk of viral infection itself, because we'll have overreaction on top of overreaction, and many lives will be seriously adversely affected.

,going to the supermarket I noticed depleted stocks and people filling their trolleys with non-perishables The supermarkets should be refusing to sell this kind of bulk buying. Unfortunately once you get enough people doing it, it then forces everyone into doing it. If the supermarkets just refused to sell bulk buys, it would stop it at a stroke and we wouldn't be facing the problems we are. However they're enjoying making the profits. Capitalism will always find a way of exploiting people's fears.

I'm not particularly concerned for myself - virtual self-isolation is a lifestyle choice for me anyway, and I have a very robust immune system – but I am concerned for a lot of my friends, most of whom are up around my age and some of them with pre-existing lung problems. Like John, though, I am concerned about the reactions, and public attitudes, spiraling out of control.
And one other thing: toilet rolls?? Why the fuck toilet rolls?

If the supermarkets just refused to sell bulk buys, it would stop it at a stroke... Some supermarkets have those 'five rolls per customer' signs. Other than the 'well if THEY'RE buying them then so should WE!' sheep mentality that G alludes to.

The Indian method becoming popular may be an unexpected legacy of all this.
As Ray said I'm not particularly concerned in terms of my own health but I am for my family -- as I said earlier both my parents would probably be classed as high risk, and my Nanna is in her mid 90s and her next sniffle may be fatal, to put it bluntly.

I'm worried about my sister. She's 57 and a lifetime smoker. Not 20 a day, but she's never kicked the habit.
My brother has been undergoing chemo and radio therapy since September. He's a risk. Both of them live in London.
My father-in-law is a fat diabetic 70 year old with heart problems. He's a risk too. Lives in outer London.

If she dies from it - and of course I hope that doesn't happen - I don't go around wishing people dead, but if they're in danger I certainly have a sliding scale of sympathy. Had to look her up. What a piece of work. Fuck it, I couldn't say I hope she doesn't die.
