I think some people who've known me on BCB and here will be surprised that I largely can't stand it. And no, I wouldn't consider Tom Petty roots rock. There are some exceptions, I'd consider CCR the granddaddy of roots rock and Los Lobos are very good, who I would consider roots rock.
On the whole though, I think it's pretty bland stuff.
This kinda shit, and I just picked it randomly because I think they suck. Think John Cougar Mellencamp.

Were the Del Fuegos considered roots rock?
What about The Blasters or The Red Devils?

Not a Blasters fan at all. That's a good example of what I don't like in roots rock.
Having writ that, I saw Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women years ago at a club in San Francisco, but it was more C&W than roots rock. I tuned out during the roots rock songs.
Never heard of the Red Devils, but the harp barely saves it for me.
I know lotsa folks love that shit, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Heard interview this weekend with Drive By Truckers' main songwriter and it reminded me of this thread.

And now, Petty guitarist, Mike Campbell, is getting in on the act.

The Del Lords were roots, the Del Fuegoes were just some Boston numpties playing alt rock of the time. They did some sponsorship with Pabst, Miller, or somebody that definitely hurt their credibility outside Boston. I remember Dan Zanes saying something about trying to be a modern Stooges of the time. Their three albums are alright decent 80s major label stuff.
Hating roots rock, its a big scene and probably the thing that will probably revitalize the mainstream and possibly dominated by young women with guitars at the moment. Roots music is the single greatest force for American musics from field hollers to bluegrass to jazz to the avantgarde, nobody else can really compete or touch on a scene like that.

It looks like since 2016 he and his musical therapist wife have moved into something called "Sensory Friendly' music, kinda like what they would have played in the "bad trip' tent, essentially children's music for millennials.
