We talk about so much why Leave won, but the question why did Remain lose is equally important. Given that one side ran a very effective campaign and the other side ran the most inept campaign in memory, the wonder may be how was the vote as close as it was!

Who is to say or judge that these new people are right or wrong? The issue with the "progressive" narrative is that its very essence suggests that what has gone before was wrong and bad. Now, in some cases, such as that of slavery, there is damning evidence about this. But it is not the only narrative. The idea that we are inexorably moving forward towards "enlightenment", coming out of the "darkness" is a very troublesome and problematic story - because it often rides roughshod over older, traditional customs, some of which are part of society, like for example Christianity, of which much in terms of our social and cultural lives is extremely important. Yes, there are sentiments such as attitudes towards homosexuality and misogyny that we all recognise need to be addressed, but there are plenty of other attitudes, some of which are very much a part of a particular culture's fabric, that are not easily removed, and one wonders whether they should be. This is difficult territory - there are often practices and customs that essentially conflict very much with the globalised, western world that we live in. Enlightened

That's the sort of pointless shit that ruins all the actual important stuff that can come from progressive politics. I mean honestly it's just such a pose. It just infuriates me.

It's appealing to as much a minority as any Conservative government does to all the rich cunts. So much mileage can be brought out of stuff like income equality, universal health care, gun control, WITHOUT all the other superfluous stuff. Focus on the core issues. You're down with trans folks? That's super, it doesn't solve the vast issues low to middle income workers have.

However when you prioritise this so much as an issue, it means you're neglecting other areas and that can send a message.

This is like two down from the original tweet Dougie posted, but it's so succinctly perfect.

Don't they call this kind of thing 'affirmative action' in the States?
Anyway, it's fucking nuts and pleases no-one except a minority of boo-hoo arseholes who never get their hands dirty.

Warren said she was 1/32 Navajo.
She said that because to claim Native American ancestry now affords you a form of political privilege. "Hey I'm descended from Native American ancestry and have a better claim than a 100% white woman. I'm one of you"
This over correction stuff, where you go from one axiom to the polarised opposite, is not going to end well.

How has affirmative action worked out? You see it with the diversity thing. Warren was pushing this the other day...she would have at least 50% women and non-binary people etc. This is nonsense and it's nonsense that doesn't appeal outside of a small group within the left. Americans won't go for that. They believe in a meritocracy where if you work hard enough and are talented enough you can get to those positions. They want the best people, they aren't keen on other groups of people being discriminated against just to give a hand up to a woman or a non-binary person. It's about the kind of country you wish to live in and reaffirming the ideals they believe in. There is something very patronising about it. White saviour complex. It gives people meaning though.

They want the best people I think they must have a different definition of the word "best" than I do.

I believe in affirmative action, but it's tricky. The University of California system is being sued by Asian Americans because they say the university system is not accepting them as readily anymore because they represent such a large portion of the student population. My daughter was telling me that they went to the Chinese takeaway near our old house. The owner and his wife are about my age, first generation Chinese immigrants. I told my daughter that the last time I went, years ago, the daughter was taking orders. I'd known them since they were little and taking orders as children and I asked her what she was doing. She was going to medical school. My daughter said she was helping out her parents last weekend, even though she's probably a doctor or researcher by now.

Academics are issuing warnings about a UK organisation that is calling on students to report lecturers’ “political bias” for publication on its website. “Education Watch” is based on a US site that lists lecturers who have advanced what it calls “leftist propaganda”. Academics in the US have faced threats of death, rape and harm to their children after being singled out by “Professor Watchlist”.
“This is populist rightwing propaganda, encouraging the false idea that there are evil professors out there, indoctrinating young people, who need to be dealt with,” says Eric Lybeck, presidential academic fellow at Manchester University’s Institute of Education and a member of the Council for the Defence of British Education, who has been researching the organisation. “Turning Point UK and Education Watch have been transplanted to the UK very intentionally by rightwing groups in the US. They are pretending to be a student organisation, but they are not a grassroots organisation at all.”
One professor was put on the list for a book chapter on how to teach maths in a way that works better for black and minority ethnic children. “She was inundated with death threats. She was Jewish and received antisemitic threats and threats of sexual assault. Instances like that are happening with some regularity,” he says.www.theguardian.com/education/2020/mar/10/mccarthyism-uk-universities-academics-fear-shaming-for-leftwing-views
