"You won't be seeing rainbows anymore..."
His greatest, right? More drama than a Xmas episode of Eastenders. Some wonderful moments in the arrangement (castanets, fabulous strings and backing vocs), the funereal drumbeat, the climactic "it's oooveeeeer". There's no way back from this. It really is over and all that's left is crying alone in the park and empty booze bottles.
One of those songs that that captures one of those moments of your life with such intensity and operatic drama it will break your heart all over again (think Ralph when Lisa says she only went out with him cos she felt sorry for the poor bastard).
And that voice! The greatest in pop ever? Hmmmm....

The king of high drama without being overly saccharine enough to make someone diabetic.

It really is over and all that's left is crying alone in the park and empty booze bottles... Top ten O, wouldn't argue, but not the best. Running Scared has more drama, Crying and Love Hurts more affect, Blue Bayou has a hypnotic sway to it that's irresistible, In Dreams was a thing of wonder long before Lynch got his greasy mitts on it, while Only the Lonely was an absolute one-off, game-changing, lightning in a bottle hit (rather like Runaway, released about the same time). Wild Hearts was pretty damn good, too. Then there's his rocking side, Mean Woman Blues, Pretty Woman, Dream Baby, even early rockabilly hits such as Ooby Dooby. Not saying It's Over isn't great, or that he isn't one of the great white voices, just that there are so many fine singles, in various styles (only the Everly Brothers have a better and as varied a run in that period), that 'the best' is one of those things that changes with one's mood.

No - it's his greatest. It's absolutely stunning.
Well played, Dougie.
