Will anyone give me a hard time about cross-posting? Anyway, I'd forgotten this, but here's what I said on BCB:

No!
And I'm surprised at you, G. In many ways that album is the opposite of the sort of thing you (seem to) go for.

I hated it growing up, but in the last few years I've warmed to it, particularly that whole Breathe/ Great Gig sequence. There are still things I don't like about it : its clinical, processed feel, the judgemental attitudes of Waters songwriting; but there are some beautiful, evocative passages of music.

Maybe Floyd are helped because there are different periods, including some that aren't as well known so there is more of a sense of discovery. For example the post-Syd/prior to DSOTM is the kind of embryonic period that Zep don't have because they basically arrived complete right out the box. That period seems to appeal to a lot of hardcore fans.

Do people grow out of Zep and grow into Floyd?

That's the subtext of some of the discussion made on the other board.

Do people grow out of Zep and grow into Floyd? You mean, once the testosterone decreases and thoughts of pretentious and false intellectualism replace it? I joke, but that's kinda the difference between them. I like Pink Floyd, but thinking that listening to their later albums is going to raise your IQ is kinda faulty reasoning.

Well DSOTM is the last palatable thing they did. Stuff like Animals or The Wall is some of the worst music known to mankind.

SydFloyd: debut and singles
RickFloyd: '68-'72 Saucer through OBC (I can't think of any band with experimental ambitions being allowed to telecast alongside the moon landings in the US as Floyd were allowed).
RogerFloyd: DSOTM through Final Cut: "being stoned and thinking big thoughts are/is easy, you can do it at home with your stereo"
DaveFloyd: Momentary thru Endless (more bland than bland could be)
NickFloyd: Mason's Saucerful of Secrets tribute
