What do you think about him? Are you a fan? Favourite films?
I was watching this clip the other day and it almost brought a tear to my eye...

He's a bit of a blind spot for me in that I've only seen two films and one of those I really didn't like (Armacord). The critics really love him, don't they?

Why didn't you like Amarcord?
I thought it was full of life!

Why didn't you like Amarcord? I thought it was full of life! Well it's a long time since I attempted to watch it, but just seemed pretty silly. The humour seemed childish and dated to me. I just couldn"t get into it.

I love Amarcord. It is dream-like and has an irreverence to it that I find charming. He was on the downslope at that point though.
There's something in the move from realism to fantasy he took that I love, which is why 8 1/2 is so great because it twists and turns in and out of both so effortlessly.

I adore him.
8 1/2 is probably my favorite but I’d have no problem claiming at least a half dozen as favorites. They say that when he & Kursowa met in person that they embraced.
I think he was one of the greats. He took great pleasure in making movies. Watch one of his later films. It might not be the best Fellini movie you ever saw but it’s undeniably a fuckin’ Fellini movie. His best work can spark joy or sadness or even a great big, hollow emptiness which he can manage to fashion into something meaningful one way or the other.
You ever see “ ...and the ship sails on”? the boat is a set. The waves are burlap. He shows you that what you are seeing is born of film making. And yet, poor people huddle together to stay warm. Opera singers fill the hull of the ship with song. Fellini loved making films and he usually loved the people he populated them with. I find his films exuberant.
