I haven't played video games in years, but lately I noticed my 8 year old son took a great interest in our Nintendo Wii games.
Before Christmas, I started looking at the Nintendo Switch; their newest, sleek, well-marketed console. The basic console and one controller cost $300, with each additional controller at $70 each. Each game runs from $50 to $80, so if we wanted to start with a few games and controllers for the kids we'd be sitting at $600 minimum. That's with no backwards compatibility with the Wii games. It seemed excessive given his limited interest.
So instead I got the previous Nintendo console; a Wii U for $130 bundled with 3 games. The decision made me concerned we would be missing out in some way, but now I know it was the right decision.
The Wii U gives us the backwards compatibility with the Wii, HDMI connectivity, and used games are usually around $15. Plus, most of the first wave titles for the Switch turned out to be ports of Wii U games. On top of that, we are avoiding their new model of subscription based services, and we can call ourselves "retro gamers".
Anyone else here playing these consoles? What do you think of them?
