Two excellent picks. They're filling the room and I'm impressed. I hadn't even heard of A, and I think I might have heard the name Yusef Lateef, but no music that I can remember.
The Bobbi Humphrey track reminds me a wee bit of something Gil Scott-Heron might do, but with a more ambitious backing. Yusef has those frantic congos (?) you get on some of those early Curtis albums.
After a bit of umm-ing and ahh-ing I'm going for
A
- it's just that bit more powerful, it seems to have a bit more going on, or something. If B had more wah-wah and a touch less flute I'd really be stumped! Thanks for the introduction to both of these dudes.

I like A a lot - Bobbi is not a 'dude', btw - but it goes on a bit. I could have done well without the synth outro.
Even though B isn't really all that flute-driven, there is a turn-of-the-decade style of jazz funk that I really like that Lateef is one of the masters of (Ahmad Jamal would be another). This one, as the Dave cliche goes, goes more interesting places in less time.

Love both of these. Did you know that both artists featured in both of my BCB cup winning lists, but different tracks to these ( 'Harlem River Drive' and 'Eastern Market').

Not impressed that G's trying to force an abstain out of me before I've even listened. Terrible synth sound in A, really horrible. Strange hearing a flute over the top of it though, it's like early Kraftwerk with a malevolent funk influence. The flute's really nice, as is the piano, it's just a shame it has been performed in this idiom.
B's rhythm section are approaching something I'm much more comfortable with, but I'm less impressed with the flute work. As a track on its own, it's a better beast, but as higgh-falutin flutin goes, it's lesser. The vocals are kinda shit, the question is, are they as shit as that synth in track one?
No. B

I found both of these pretty dull, really, the beat isn't doing much in either to carry them far. I noticed the flute more in B, so I'll vote for that.

Kraftwerk??? It's a bit early for the acid DF!

Kraftwerk??? It's a bit early for the acid DF! Just say yes, kids. The synth/flute combination fired some damaged synapse that makes me think of Kraftwerk.

Florian Schneider was a prominent flautist in early Kraftwerk.

Florian Schneider was a prominent flautist in early Kraftwerk. That's actually my very favourite Kraftwerk tune. I don't care for that much of their early stuff, but that thing is fantastic.

There's some gems in the first albums for sure. It's actually quite freaky how close the tone of that flute is to their synth sound, especially on Autobahn.

Oh we are deep in the fange wheelhouse now. Drop anchors! B gets deep into the groove, very hypnotic and entrancing. But A has more going for me melodically, with BH's beautiful playing and the those gorgeous 70s synths.
