The fella got a good innings, and has perhaps the widest ranging CV of any actor. To me he'll always be Lankester Merrin, and I'll always try to forget he was ever in Judge Dredd.

Checkmate, finally. Back when I was a cineaste (1964-76, approx), I was a great fan of MvS, as no-one at all refers to him, for his work with Bergman. I never have seen, never will see, The Exorcist. He'll always be Antonius Block or Jonas Persson to me. A wonderfully expressive actor, able to convey so much through stillness. RIP

I never have seen, never will see, The Exorcist. Is there a reason behind the boycott?

I never have seen, never will see, The Exorcist. Is there a reason behind the boycott? Well, I'm not keen on horror movies, but it just happened really, and I can't imagine any circumstances in which I'd bother to see it now. And it does feature Mike Oldfield.

And it does feature Mike Oldfield. The bit where Oldfield turns green, his head twists 360 degrees and he starts speaking in a diabolical tongue is good though.

The Tubular Bells scene with the falling leaves is one of my favourite brief moments in film, so subtly eerie.

My Dad was a motion picture projectionist. All our friends wanted him to let them in for free when he was running "The Exorcist". He'd let them in for free but he'd make them endure a little harangue before he did. He'd sit them down in the projection booth and tell them why he hated it so much. then he'd ask them why they wanted to see it. He would tell them for about 35 minutes how long the church had it's hand up people's asses blaming everything on Satan. He thought, just as the modern world was getting away from that crap - along comes a pop culture phenomenon bringing it all crashing back again. I thought he made a pretty good case. so, why did they want to see it? because they heard it was a really good movie. :lol.
I always thought it was a really good movie. I knew more than one kid that needed to go into therapy because of that movie. I think it gilds the lily a lot but that's something movies do sometimes - especially in the 70's. some of the scariest stuff for me is Ellen Burstyn walking down hallways. I think it's very well directed and performed if WAY too gooey to my taste.
As for Max, I paid money to see that stupid "Flash Gordon" movie when it was new. I'd seen the trailer so I pretty much knew what to expect. what the hell. At the end of that movie - Max Von Sydow (as Ming the Merciless) is impaled on the spike of one of the retro design spaceships. I was delighted. I saw a friend Afterwards who mistook my delight for thinking it was a good movie. he went to see it. it was years before he forgave me. Max Von Sydow did great movies and he did lousy movies but I always thought he was topnotch. He made getting impaled on a spike in a dumb-ass Dino DeLaurentis movie look like fucking Hamlet as far as I was concerned. I just loved the guy.
He could do good or evil and everything in between. I like him in roles like "3 Days of the Condor" where he manages to do both in the same role. there aren't many as good as him.
