Oh I do struggle with Robert Wyatt's singing. This one .. god. So I possibly disproportionately really enjoyed

Matching Mole did 'O Caroline' which is a beauty. Unfortunately this one's a bit of a dog. I love Wyatt's voice but you've only really got half an hour's worth of good stuff over his whole career.
The other thing is naff Europop. I think this lot did the original 'Criminal World' which Bowie covered. Anyway it's still quite a bit better than A

Blimey, prog goons ahoy, are Joel and Ale late entrants in the cup? This is more pleasant than I was expecting, the absence of drums so far may be the bonus, they kill this kind of thing. Wyatt seems to be making a decent fist of a lack of a melody line though. Was he still drinking at this point?
Supertrampy intro. Hmm, I was expecting this to me more of a catchy thing given the scorn poured on A so far, but this is quite horrible. Feels like a proggish take on AOR to me, those high-pitched chorus vocals are awful. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's a deeply unpleasant smell about this thing. Feels more American than Europop, those guitars...

By god (pun intended) do I ever love A with an intense passion. Love Wyatt to begin with, but even as a -- let's just say not irreligious person - I relate to the lyrics. I suppose fundamentalists would find it blasphemous. I suppose that's one reason I'm not a fundamentalist. I find it hilarious, particularly the part about how we could have related to a pretty daughter more than the long-haired, European-looking son. And I feel like it has all kinds of melody - I love the way it swirls around the notes. This might be one of the best Wyatt songs to me. Despite all this, no, this is not my pick.
I gave a cursory listen to B, and it's fine. But it's not one of my favorite recordings ever.

Was he still drinking at this point? The answer is decidedly yes - he refers to it in the song, but this is also pre-accident. Not to mention as far as I know, he's only become sober in the last few years.

Struggling with both here. A is too rambling and tuneless. B is a kind of musos try and do pop thing which feels very airless and processed.A bit like late period Police without the tunes. There's probably a bit more about B

I had both of those records and actually listened to them! I get people's problem with Wyatt but I think there is a sincerity to his singing that either gets you or it don't. it gets me most of the time.
I only remember one track of the other and this isn't it. Thrift Store Roxy Music. A

B was actually quite nice and even nicer after listening to A. Probably biggest difference so far in this Cup.

Neither of these are particularly in view from my wheely bin and I need to get work done instead of trying too much harder. Abstain.

I don't have problems with RW's voice, but what's going on behind it is the essence of my dislike of prog.
Nothing to like in B either.

Robert and I have grown steadily apart, back in the day he was a vital part of a prepunk British arty alternative along with Eno, Ayers, Coyne, Cale, etc.,
