Not in the mood to write much yet. But Prine meant a lot to me.
If it weren’t so hard to post songs here, I’d post a bunch. Billy the Bum, Bruised Orange, Far From Me, The Late John Garfield Blues...
Just play a bunch of his songs. He was as great as they come.

If it weren’t so hard to post songs here, I’d post a bunch. It's easy! see the clapperboard icon at the top of the box where you type your reply, on the right? click on that, insert the whole youtube irl (copy and paste the whole thing from your address bar), then 'insert video' and post.

Like this... One of the greats. That is a wonderful song, but I had no idea he wrote it - I know it from Bette Midler, who owned it. I hardly ever heard him perform, could not name a single track, but for writing like that, nothing but admiration. RIP

To be honest, I'm not sure I'd even heard of John Prine before he caught Coronavirus, but that song's a good 'un, makes me think I should probably check out more.

This got some play on FM radio years ago. Something short of being a hit but ,Los Angeles stations played it. R.I.P.

I came to Prine via an old friend of mine who used to play him all the time back when we lived together in our weird musicians' commune (Fuck the bank! Goldrich VS Shitpoor, etc.) and he used to hammer the fuck out of this tune in particular...
We'd always yell out the "Goddamn! My socks are still hard" line.

My parents (pretty hardcore 1970s lefties) played the shit out of Prine's debut album when I was 5/6/thereabouts. The image of the album cover has been pretty well burned into my mind's eye ever since, ditto the chorus to "Sam Stone" (which, minus any explicit understanding of its lurid connotation, still really stuck to this little boy's brain). The locals here claim him, cause he got his start in our old venues and grew up (and delivered mail) only a few miles away. The number of people I know who met him or knew him is unusually high.
I think we're all tuned in, at some level, to "the human condition" - not necessarily dripping, maudlin pathos, but...just responding to something in the things we watch, hear, read that offers a glimmer of recognition. Prine's most salient gift, as I see it, was that his own work carried such an abundance of that very thing.

You wouldn't know it from his two most famous songs, but he was also funny as hell.
I posted this on another thread last night when I got the news, but here it is again - the last song on what has turned out to be his last album, and the perfect one to go out on:

Excellent interview! I wonder if MOJO has any other months old interviews they’ll publish should somebody die?

Saw something along the lines that over the weekend, I guess, Prine had racked up over 20 million listens on Spotify, too bad it took death and possibly a pandemic to get more widely heard.
