OK, so I'll listen to some Shack later and post a couple of tracks before someone chimes in with Inspiral Carpets recommendations... Listened to quite a few tunes over the last couple of days. None of it made an impression. Mid-paced, well produced, melodic but not at all memorable. I think Copehead's law applies in this case - i.e. if they were any good they'd have had hits. What made Shack, The Pale Fountains, The Strands and Michael Head's other bands exceptional is that, amid all the post-punk lot who took their inspiration from the VU, Doors, Byrds, Beatles, Who, Kinks, and so on, they took theirs from Love, not just in the tune-smithery, but also the guitar sound and harmonies: so much so that when Arthurly toured in Britain, he got them to provide his backing as they already knew and could play his entire set perfectly. Fair enough you don't like them – never imagined you would – don't think they've even seen a garage. And just because it's nice to find something to agree on, The Coral are a hell of a band, yes: they also have a lovely way with a tune and hints of melancholy, like the Head brothers' bands, but they're basically much younger and less junked up (if at all): they are my UK favourites from this century along with Cumbria's finest, BSP.

Giant Steps is The One for the Boo Radleys. There's an ambition and carefree experimentation that really works. One of the best British albums of that period and nothing else they did is close. I dunno who the lead fella from Shack is but I can see the similarities with Mavers....knack for melody, love of the 60s. Waterpistol and H.M.S fable have both given me pleasure but I would place The La's above 'em. I wouldn't. Michael Head is on another level to Lee Mavers in terms of the quality of his songwriting and arrangements. I'm with Ray, for once, on that one. The Magical World of The Strands is his masterpiece, such a beautiful album.
