Now and again someone I know will really talk up one of these bands (was there a 90s 'Liverpool Scene' of any kind?) and although what I hear is enough to make me swing my pants, they fall a bit short of what The La's were doing. Or even The Coral, a decade later.
Or?

Shack, La's, Boo Radleys, Lightning Seeds, Scorpio Rising, etc., all seem capable of contributing a tune to two to a toe tapping 90s Liverpud comp.

I'd love to hear more about these bands, because they kinda passed me by in real time; my 90s were much more into deeper digging of jazz, soul, krautrock, US indie and 50s rock and roll than 2nd-3rd tier Brit pop guitar bands.

Or even The Coral, a decade later. Or? The Boos and Shack (or indeed any other band involving the Head brothers, such as The Pale Fountains and The Strands, in the ’80s and the 00s) were great favourites of mine, as were the Coral earlier this century, but since the first and last were from the Wirral, and The La's were a disgusting bunch of junkie wasters from the ’80s, I don't think that we can talk of a Liverpool 'scene' of any kind in the ’90s. And since what the La's were doing for the entire decade was sitting about picking their scabs or, worse, forming Cast, the whole idea that these other great bands featuring brilliant songwriters were falling short of their standards (one hugely over-rated two minute single about junk and a poor LP released in 1990), has provoked me immoderately.

Well, don't forget the Farm, Space, Dodgy, Zutons, Real People, along with all the others mentioned. But I don't think you'll find a specific Liverpool sound ala the 60s or late 70s/early 80s. I think by then there was a revelling in a certain modern-ness across the UK, of all bands/artists. I think there is fun to be found, but one album of each is probably more than enough. Thankfully, most of these can be found pretty cheap on cd, less so on vinyl.

I used to really like the Boo Radleys and Lightning Seeds but there got to be too much coming and going with UK rock bands issuing debuts and falling off the map. Shit, the PR guy for the Libertines should have been paid a ton considering how much mileage he got out of those jokers. But I guess that's the nature of the beast - the next big thing.
Where's Franz Ferdinand today?

Giant Steps is The One for the Boo Radleys. There's an ambition and carefree experimentation that really works. One of the best British albums of that period and nothing else they did is close.
I dunno who the lead fella from Shack is but I can see the similarities with Mavers....knack for melody, love of the 60s. Waterpistol and H.M.S fable have both given me pleasure but I would place The La's above 'em.

OK, so I'll listen to some Shack later and post a couple of tracks before someone chimes in with Inspiral Carpets recommendations...

OK, so I'll listen to some Shack later and post a couple of tracks before someone chimes in with Inspiral Carpets recommendations... Listened to quite a few tunes over the last couple of days. None of it made an impression. Mid-paced, well produced, melodic but not at all memorable. I think Copehead's law applies in this case - i.e. if they were any good they'd have had hits. The Boo Radleys are a different matter, altho' they're still a bit Plymouth Argyle. This one's good

and I'd say The Coral beat the lot (La's, Shack, Boos)
