ACK! that's terrible. what a tremendous actor and presence. I've been trying to get somebody at my house to watch "Cracker" for years. they'd love it if they'd just sit down with it. He gives you a sense that he understands psychos because he is a repressed psycho himself. you see both things in his eyes! you see that he's a psycho and you see that he wants to be a force for good. dynamite acting.
my youngster is going to be GUTTED, I just know it. He really did hit Hagrid out of the park. they couldn't have possibly cast it with a more suitable actor. R.I.P.

Was going to start a thread. He was fantastic in 'Cracker' and always an actor I enjoyed watching. I don't know if he struggled to get the right parts sometimes...his size probably went against him with casting directors.

Was quite surprised to see he was that old too.

I've recently rewatched all 11 episodes.
It really is terrific, he has a huge presence. ... and I had a slight crush on Penhaligan once again .
The pace is very much "of its age", though - which isn't a bad thing in my book at all. Current TV is much too ADHD for my liking.
Anyway, casting him as Hagrid was a genius move too.
RIP big fella

I haven't seen him in anything later than 2000 or so, but I loved him in Tutti Frutti and the Comic Strip stuff (to the point where I wouldn't bother with them at all if he wasn't in it). He had the most incredible onscreen presence, and even at his most fearsome, you got a sense of his kindness and his humour. He could be spectacularly, gut-bustingly funny. I'd love to have met him.
RIP.

I haven't seen him in anything later than 2000 or so... Me neither, apart from the Harry Potter stuff
His last part seems to have been Orson Welles for Urban Myths

RIP Irene Cara. She was 63. Too young.
I make no great claims. But she had had a moment, and I was just the right age.
Always thought this one was lovely:

I've a friend who used to run a bar beside the Empire Theatre in Sunderland and he'd often get famous people in from shows. He told me Ruth Madoc was the nicest he met. Ho-de-ho, Gladys.
