My mate Dev had a Joy Division tribute band ( although I know he'd hate me calling them that) and he told me he very much based their sound on the live gigs rather than the records. Then again Hannett brought something very special to them that made them stand out, but something was lost too.

Failures
"wise words and sympathy tell the story of our history" always stood out as a lyric to me
I wish more of the lyrics stood out as they're frequently great.
Interesting the discussion about Hannett's production. I wouldn't argue with anyone who says he's a genius but in the case of Joy Division... I dunno. Something's lost and something's gained, as G says. The "lost" bit being a level of energy worthy of the Stooges, perhaps. I still can't get used to the sound of the first album.
