I like JD a lot.
NO I struggle with. I don’t think he can sing. Ability doesn’t come into it. It’s not like Curtis was Pavarotti, but he communicated something beyond the notes and words. Sumner sounds like he wants to be somewhere else in every song I’ve heard.
The music is lightweight fluff in comparison.

I can't do a top five without going back over their 12" singles catalogue (the only format in which to listen to them, albums always a relative disappointment), but True Faith would definitely be number one, with Temptation, Everything's gone green, World in Motion, Touched by the Hand of God, The Perfect Kiss (& The Perfect Pit), Thieves Like Us (and the instrumental version on the B of the Murder 12", Murder, Cries and Whispers, 1963, Blue Monday in various versions and Bizzare Love Triangle jostling for a place behind it.

Thieves Like Us, Blue Monday, and the out-of-nowhere late classic Crystal I do like quite a bit.
Most of the test is just SAW on a downer

I always thought that New Order could've auditioned by stopping the first person they saw in the street, and asking them to be singer instead. But then I heard Stephen Morris's vocals, and it seems that Sumner might not have been the worst choice.

They sound absolutely nothing like them, but you've always had a blind spot where New Order are concerned.

Recently read a white paper regarding suicide ideation pertaining to white male musicians drawing a continuum from Ian Curtis, Rozz Williams, Kurt Cobain, Staley, Elliott Smith, etc., and how Chris Cornell's and Chester Bennington's recent deaths have reawakened an ideation thought to have been eclipsed by white males and school shootings. There was major suicide contagion in the US 80s hardcore scene that seem to connect to the 90s grunge scene which seem to spur greater interest, research and sophistication in dealing with suicide in the 90s in the US.
