Toots Hibbert might be my favorite.

For me it's has to be collectively The Mighty Diamonds, even in these days of 'everything' being elevated to classic status, I still don't see their 1976 album 'Right Time' mentioned that much. It's an absolute classic. They were clearly influenced by singers like Curtis Mayfield,Smokey Robinson,Marvin etc... I think most people know the tune 'I Need A Roof' which is incredible, but other tracks like 'Africa", 'Go Seek Your Rights'..sod it, just listen to the whole album, it's on another level.

Leroy Sibbles or Toots Hibbert, probably. I really like Lloyd Parks' singing voice as well, as i've been digging his stuff recently.

Surprised that I'm the first to mention Gregory Isaacs. No Bob Marley yet, either. How cool are we?

I really don't like reggae, as a rule, but I've learned to appreciate some of it via the margins, which is why I mentioned Barrington Levy. I know his tracks largely from jungle remixes, but it turns out the originals are pretty palatable, too.

Sibbles Toots, Mowatt Delgado Murvin Griffiths
The rocksteady era with its heavy soul influences had the greatest singers, reggae/roots while still good, was a step down.

Whole different ballgame. I Need a Roof is beautiful and there are several versions out there. My favorite reggae vocal groups are the Viceroys and Justin Hinds and the Dominoes.

Another singer I truly love that didn't make the top rung is Frankie Paul. Not the best, but he has a great style.
