A psychotic music fan has put a gun to your head and is making you choose one artist of the two offered to take to your desert island. You cannot refuse.. Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin Van Halen or Motorhead The Ramones or New York Dolls The Doors or The Stranglers Radiohead or Magazine Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder Captain Beefheart- or The Fall The Beastie Boys or Tupac Coil or Cabaret Voltaire U2 or The Pretty Things
Give reasons if you want..

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - I love both, but I know Marvin's catalog better than I know Aretha's, so a desert island might be a good opportunity to get to know Ms. Franklin better.
Van Halen or Motorhead - Motorhead.
The Ramones or New York Dolls - another tough one. I'll say Dolls, even though it's a much slimmer catalog.
The Doors or The Stranglers - Doors, no contest.
Radiohead or Magazine - oof - not a fan of either, but I suspect Magazine would annoy me less. I might even find some songs I like in there.
Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - Smokey, easily.
Townes Van Zandt or Ry Cooder - Townes.
Captain Beefheart or The Fall - Mr. Van Vliet, no contest.
The Beastie Boys or Tupac - Beasties.
Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - I guess CV.
U2 or The Pretty Things - Pretties.

Mostly easy choices. Marvin or Aretha made me think the most, Marvin had the bigger high points for me personally.
Marvin Gaye Motorhead The Ramones The Doors!! Radiohead dunno Townes Van Zandt The Fall Tupac Coil U2

First, I would buy time and bore the shit out of them with back stories to each of the artists, they would let me go for their own mercy to hear me shut up . If it happened in the UK more than likely the weapon would be an antique and I would just play along, if in the US more than likely they wouldn't know anything about the artists they have selected, but the threat would be real.
Marvin (Aretha's early 60s sides are sublime, but she was MOR dreck for most of the 70s) Magazine Dolls Doors Ry Motorhead Jackie Wilson Beefheart Tupac coil u2

Aretha Franklin - Love Aretha, only like Marvin
Van Halen - More, better songs. More variety.
The Ramones - Never liked Johansen's voice. I think the Dolls are overrated.
The Doors - Tough choice. The Doors for more, better songs
Magazine - I have never gotten into much Radiohead nor do I want to make the effort.
Smokey Robinson - One of the first singles I bought was Tears of a Clown
Townes Van Sant - Not a huge Cooder fan. Very average voice and not a great songwriter.
The Fall - I want to say Beefheart, but I've listened to much more Fall for a reason.
The Beastie Boys - I think Tupac is overrated. At his best, he competes with the Beastie Boys, but he rarely stayed there.
Cabaret Voltaire - Don't know Coil at all. I have me some Cabaret Voltaire albums. I like 'em. Red Mecca is a favorite.
The Pretty Things - If you had asked me this 30 years ago, around War, it wouldn't even have been a question. U2 have not worn well for me.

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - Gaye had the more interesting career, I think - more adventurous. Aretha of course touched the stratosphere on occasion but never moved me as much as MG with 'Grapevine' and What's Going On (and in fact those early Motown singles too)
Van Halen or Motorhead - I fucking hate Motorhead. Lemmy was a bore, all excess and no personality, 'Ace Of Spades' is foul. VH's debut is one of my favourite records
The Ramones or New York Dolls - the Dolls turn me on much more than the Ramones by all the usual metrics
The Doors or The Stranglers - no other answer is acceptable now is it?
Radiohead or Magazine - not a fan of Radiohead, they're boring
Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - not too familiar with JW apart from a handful of hits. Smokes is dope
Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - can't be arsed with either. Maybe when I'm 78
Captain Beefheart- or The Fall - not going to choose
The Beastie Boys or Tupac - don't really know Tupac but most people who wibble on about him seem a bit simple
Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - fuck off
U2 or The Pretty Things - the Pretties danced, U2 stomp

I find Lemmy fairly ridiculous too but the other option was Van Halen.

Van Halen are the greatest pop/rock band ever. Motorhead had one song.

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - It's close but MG offers me real highs throughout his career. With Aretha I'm mainly interested in the early 70s period. Van Halen or Motorhead - Motorhead may be limited but they get to a certain essence of rock n' roll. VH are a cheap circus act with naff guitar solos. The Ramones or New York Dolls- I prefer The Dolls wild shambolic nature (epitomised by 'Personality Crisis') to The Ramones more disciplined sound. The Doors or The Stranglers - The Doors Radiohead or Magazine - Both a little too dour, but much more interesting songwriting in the latter and they have an edge that Radiohead never had. Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - I'm going for Wilson because he was still putting great records out into the 70s. Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - I don't know much about either, but for the Paris, Texas soundtrack alone I go for the latter. Captain Beefheart- or The Fall. Some great singles from the latter. The Beastie Boys or Tupac Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - Don't know much about Coil, but a grown man writing songs about Noddy doesn't really appeal to me. Tend to prefer the Cabs when they got a bit more commercial in the mid 80s to the early stuff. U2 or The Pretty Things. Easiest choice yet

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - Aretha, more familiar with her tunes. Van Halen or Motorhead - Motorhead, can't take van halen seriously. The Ramones or New York Dolls - Ramones, more familiar with their tunes. The Doors or The Stranglers - The Stranglers, seem better craic. Radiohead or Magazine - Please, c'mon. Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - Smokey? Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - Don't know these folk, so Cooder? Captain Beefheart- or The Fall - Beefheart. The Beastie Boys or Tupac - Tupac Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - Heard of Cabaret Voltaire , but don't know their music so, Cabaret. U2 or The Pretty Things - Never U2, JUST NEVER.
