Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - Don't know much about Coil, but a grown man writing songs about Noddy doesn't really appeal to me.
I think you're getting them mixed up with Current 93 there.

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - Marvin. I have a lot of respect for Aretha (see what I did there), but I expect that I'd feel soothed by Marv, and hectored by Aretha
Van Halen or Motorhead - Motorhead. Even if everything Coan wrote was correct, that still sounds preferable to Van Halen. Lemmy and co put on a decent gig, and had a handful of decent songs.
The Ramones or New York Dolls - Ramones. Never understood the fuss over NYD, whereas the Ramones' debut is perfect bubblegum pop.
The Doors or The Stranglers - Stranglers, but I'd probably choose to leave them both behind.
Radiohead or Magazine - Radiohead. Much more interesting and diverse.
Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson. Jackie Wilson. Partly out of respect for my dad, who had a big soft spot for Jackie.
Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - Townes. I still haven't really delved in, but Ry Cooder doesn't interest me at all.
Captain Beefheart- or The Fall - Beefheart. Could I swap some Fall for The Stranglers, I'd only want a couple of albums.
The Beastie Boys or Tupac - Tupac. I don't like either, I just can't stand The Beastie's voices, whiny little bastards.
Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - Coil, easily. Much more varied, and when they went properly electronic they were more effective than the Cabs leap in that direction. Love the Cabs though.
U2 or The Pretty Things - U2.

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - Aretha. That voice. Van Halen or Motorhead - Motorhead easily. Van Halen are just spandex wank. The Ramones or New York Dolls - Ramones. Although I do love the Dolls too. The Doors or The Stranglers - The Stranglers, by a long way. Radiohead or Magazine - It would be Radiohead if it was only their first 3 albums. But from Kid A onwards, shite. So Magazine. Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - Smokey. Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - Don't know either of them well enough to choose. Captain Beefheart- or The Fall - The Fall. The Beastie Boys or Tupac - Beastie Boys. Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - Cabaret Voltaire. U2 or The Pretty Things - first three U2 albums. After that, Pretty Things.

Aretha
Motorhead
Ramones
Doors
Radiohead
Jackie Wilson
Ry Cooder
Beefheart-
Beasties
throw up the coin: Coil or Cabaret Voltaire
throw it again: U2 or The Pretty Things
the only one that surprised myself was Radiohead over Magazine. usually old loves die last.
also, can it be that I like Jackie Wilson's singing better than Smokey's???
life is full of surprises.

Marvin Gaye Van Halen New York Dolls The Stranglers - I've come to appreciate them more in the last 20 years. Even the mid 80's albums. Magazine Smokey Robinson - One of the great songwriters in r&b Ry Cooder not really a fan of either, but Cooder played on Let It Bleed Captain Beefheart Tupac Cabaret Voltaire - unfamiliar with Coil Pretty Things easiest one

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - Toughest choice here, it seems to me. But Aretha's 65-72 output seems unbeatable in that field. Van Halen or Motorhead - No fan of Motorhead, but as somebody said, the other choice was Van Halen. The Ramones or New York Dolls - NYD never clicked to me The Doors or The Stranglers - Never got much interest on the Strangers beyond the singles Radiohead or Magazine - Radiohead has far more depth and their output is more rewarding. Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - Not familiar enough with JW, but smokey seems hard to beat. Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - I've been exploriing Ry Cooder lately and there's a lot to enjoy. What I've heard from Townes is ok but doesn't seem to be in the same league to these old ears of mine. Captain Beefheart- or The Fall - again, the other choice was The Fall The Beastie Boys or Tupac - Not familiar with either Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - See above U2 or The Pretty Things - Pretty Things, although I have reconciled myself with early U2 lately

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin Gaye every time. Only Wexler stopped her from overwarbling and she didn't write any good material.
Van Halen or Motorhead Easy win for Motorhead.
The Ramones or New York Dolls Equally easy win for The Ramones, different league.
The Doors or The Stranglers Tougher. And I've no time for lazy dismissal of the Stranglers. Stranglers it is.
Radiohead or Magazine Radiohead are too easily slagged off too, even if the singer's a wassock.
Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson Tough because Smokey sold out (I expect he'd've done it even if he weren't a junkie for a while) and dials it in. But that early stuff - Smokey
Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder As much as I admire TVS's playing, I'm not a fan of the style. And I was playing some Ry Cooder the other day.
Captain Beefheart- or The Fall Neither but, if I had to choose, The Fall.
The Beastie Boys or Tupac Beastie brats or misogynist Shakur? Musically I like both a bit but Beastie Boys beats it.
Coil or Cabaret Voltaire Not especially familiar with either which tells me I'm not a fan. Just played a bit of both - Cabaret Voltaire less awful.
U2 or The Pretty Things Seen both, get the criticism of U2 and Bono is insufferably pompous but they can rock it. U2.

Gaye every time. Only Wexler stopped her from overwarbling and she didn't write any good material. Not true at all. Actually she wrote some great songs: Day Dreaming and Rock Steady are as good as anything from the early 70s by anyone. I also have a lot of time for Last Snow in Kokomo and a few others. It is true though that her spell of writing her own songs didn't last long and she appears to have been pressurised into doing covers, even though she had success with the aforementioned songs. In many ways she was the victim of a sexist and racist music industry that couldn't recognise the extent of her talent.

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin (hard!) Van Halen or Motorhead (but close!) The Ramones or New York Dolls (Dolls debut might be better than any Ramones, but the first five Ramones albums are good) The Doors or The Stranglers (are you kidding? Nowhere near close) Radiohead or Magazine (Radiohead's been pretty dull for the last decade plus, but most Magazine leaves me cold, and I still love The Bends and OK Computer Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson (songwriting makes the difference. As singers it's close) Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder (Close - Ry's doing his best to swing it the other way with his dubious original material) Captain Beefheart- or The Fall (I've come to appreciate some Fall a great deal. Still, the least close race here) The Beastie Boys or Tupac (Can't say I'm terribly knowledgeable about either, but the Beasties have always seemed like a novelty band to me) Coil or Cabaret Voltaire (again, don't know either well, but CV has some decent Bowie imitations as I remember) U2 or The Pretty Things (to no one's surprise, though U2 at least has good records in more than one decade - my PT love is pretty much all about 1965-1970)

You think they're great, I don't and that's my truth. I've just listened to the first two you mentioned, I can't see how her being black or female had anything to do with my opinion or the general reception of them at the time. They're not a patch on her great stuff and different planet to Gaye's stuff. And her vocal talent was widely recognised.
*Edit: that was in reply to G.

It shows a considerable songwriting talent.

Marvin Gaye or Aretha Franklin - Marvin. Very close really, as I love many many Aretha records, but I just have a more personal love for MG. Van Halen or Motorhead - Van Halen with DLR. 'Ace of Spades' kicks arse, but the first 6 VH albums, no contest. The Ramones or New York Dolls - Ramones. I love he Dolls, just not as much. The Doors or The Stranglers - Doors easily. I love/like a bunch of Stranglers song, but the Doors are are too deep in m musical DNA. Radiohead or Magazine - I like both and really couldn't divide them, actually. Neither is really up there for me, but the songs I like I like a lot. Smokey Robinson or Jackie Wilson - Ouch. Both wonderful in their way; maybe Smokey by a nose, for the sheer number of songs he wrote as well. Townes Van Sant or Ry Cooder - Townes. Cooder is ok in his way, but I seldom get the urge to hear his records like I do with Townes. Captain Beefheart- or The Fall - Ouch again. Probably CB for overall love, but there are a bunch of Fall records that are very dear to me. The Beastie Boys or Tupac - BBs. 'California Love' is a beast, but i'm not much of a Tupac fan really. Coil or Cabaret Voltaire - The Cabs, easily. I love/like pretty much most of their records up to and including Code. U2 or The Pretty Things - A draw. Both have made wonderful records that I love and wouldn't want to live without.
